18 MLB Stars Who Could Dish It But Couldn’t Take It

Baseball’s never been short on smack talk. Some MLB stars have turned chirping into an art form—flipping bats, jawing at pitchers, and strutting around the diamond like they owned the place.

But the moment someone dared to toss a little heat back in their direction? Total meltdown. These are the guys who could dish it with the best of them—but absolutely could not take it.

18. Yasiel Puig

October 3, 2014; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig (66) runs to third in the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals in game one of the 2014 NLDS playoff baseball game at Dodger Stadium.
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images

Puig loved a good bat flip and wasn’t afraid to get animated after big hits. But he was quick to take offense when pitchers dared to celebrate their own success.

17. Bryce Harper

Jul 10, 2021; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Philadelphia Phillies right fielder Bryce Harper (3) follows through on a two run double against the Boston Red Sox during the eighth inning at Fenway Park.
Winslow Townson-Imagn Images

He plays with flair and never met a camera he didn’t like. But let an opponent throw a little shade, and he suddenly goes full drama mode.

16. Josh Donaldson

Oct 4, 2023; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA; Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Josh Donaldson (3) throws to first in the fourth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks during game two of the Wildcard series for the 2023 MLB playoffs at American Family Field.
Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

The “Bringer of Rain” never shied away from chirping at the dugout or posing after a homer. But if you even blinked at him wrong, he took it personally.

15. Carlos Gómez

May 1, 2018; Detroit, MI, USA; Tampa Bay Rays right fielder Carlos Gomez (27) gets a hit for a single during the fourth inning against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.
Raj Mehta-Imagn Images

Gómez was known for some electric (and loud) celebrations on the base paths. But pitchers firing back with attitude didn’t sit well with him at all.

14. Manny Machado

Aug 11, 2021; San Diego, California, USA; San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (13) tosses his bat after flying out during the first inning against the Miami Marlins at Petco Park.
Orlando Ramirez-Imagn Images

Machado is the king of cool when he’s winning and loves a little on-field swagger. When things aren’t going his way, though, he tends to get testy—fast.

13. A.J. Pierzynski

May 24, 2014; St. Petersburg, FL, USA; Boston Red Sox designator hitter A.J. Pierzynski watches the flight of his three-run home run during the first inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.
Kim Klement-Imagn Images

Pierzynski talked nonstop and was constantly in the middle of something. But when the tables turned, he was usually the first to lose his cool.

12. Trevor Bauer

Aug 31, 2019; St. Louis, MO, USA; Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Trevor Bauer (27) pitches during the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium
Jeff Curry-Imagn Images

He had no problem stirring the pot, trolling opponents, and making videos about it. But anytime he was on the receiving end, things got extra sensitive.

11. Jose Bautista

Oct 19, 2016; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista (19) hits a single during the sixth inning against the Cleveland Indians in game five of the 2016 ALCS playoff baseball series at Rogers Centre.
Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images

Bat flip legend, no doubt. But when pitchers responded with a little heat or a hard slide, Bautista did not take it well (just ask Rougned Odor).

10. Nyjer Morgan

August 6, 2009; Washington, DC USA; Washington Nationals left fielder Nyjer Morgan (1) runs the bases against the Florida Marlins at Nationals Park in Washington, DC
Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

“Tony Plush” had a whole alter ego built on trash talk and flair. But even the slightest clapback had him seeing red.

9. Jonathan Papelbon

Aug 3, 2013; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon (58) runs toward the mound in the ninth inning against the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park. The Braves defeated the Phillies, 5-4 in 12 innings
Eric Hartline-Imagn Images

Papelbon was the ultimate fist-pumping, stare-down-throwing closer. But if anyone celebrated a win against him, he treated it like a personal attack.

8. Alex Rodriguez

Sep 7, 2015; Bronx, NY, USA; New York Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez (13) runs the bases after hitting a solo home run against the Baltimore Orioles during the fifth inning at Yankee Stadium
Brad Penner-Imagn Images

A-Rod never lacked confidence and knew how to needle an opponent. But when the crowd turned or pitchers challenged him, he could be visibly rattled.

7. David Wells

Oct 5, 2005; Chicago, IL, USA; Boston Red Sox starting pitcher #16 David Wells delivers a pitch in the first inning against the Chicago White Sox during game 2 of the American League Division Series at US Cellular Field.
Jerry Lai-Imagn Images

He was loud, proud, and loved making headlines. But he wasn’t exactly great at handling boos or getting shown up by hitters.

6. Brian McCann

Apr 18, 2018; Seattle, WA, USA; Houston Astros catcher Brian McCann (16) hits a double against the Seattle Mariners during the seventh inning at Safeco Field
Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images

McCann fancied himself the unwritten rules police, often lecturing others about decorum. But he was far less vocal when teammates did the exact same stuff.

5. Carlos Zambrano

Aug 28, 2005; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Cubs starting pitcher #38 Carlos Zambrano salutes the crowd after being removed from the game after his last at-bat of the day in the 8th inning at Wrigley Field. The Cubs defeated the Marlins 14-3.
Jerry Lai-Imagn Images

Zambrano loved barking at hitters and showing emotion on the mound. When things went sideways, though, his tantrums were legendary.

4. Barry Bonds

Aug 13, 2007; Pittsburgh, PA, USA; San Francisco Giants left fielder (25) Barry Bonds waves to a fan during their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA. The Pirates beat the Giants 3-1 in game 1
Tom Szczerbowski-Imagn Images

Bonds had a stare and strut that oozed intimidation. But when pitchers threw inside or didn’t pitch to him, he made it known he wasn’t pleased.

3. Roger Clemens

June 27, 2006; Detroit, MI, USA; Houston Astros starting pitcher (22) Roger Clemens delivers a pitch against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park
Tom Szczerbowski-Imagn Images

Clemens threw at guys regularly and glared like it was a sport. But if anyone dared to celebrate a homer off him, he took it like a personal insult.

2. Curt Schilling

Aug 12, 2007; Baltimore, MD, USA; Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling (38) pitches against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards in Baltimore, MD. Baltimore defeated Boston 6-3.
James Lang-Imagn Images

Schilling always had something to say and never passed up a chance to stir the pot. Criticism, however? That was met with endless deflection and outrage.

1. Madison Bumgarner

Sep 3, 2021; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner (40) pitches against the Seattle Mariners during the first inning at Chase Field
Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images

Few pitchers dished it out like MadBum, especially with his stares and growls. But if anyone flipped a bat or celebrated, he acted like baseball’s moral compass had shattered.
