Your quest is to Rescue Princess Rena. You’ll have to navigate the Valley of Doom and defeat the evil King Golvellius. The play combines real-time combat and exploration of various regions. You’ll also need to upgrade your character’s equipment.
Why is it cherished? For its non-linear exploration, the challenging combat that keeps you on your toes, and the captivating soundtrack that immerses you in the fantasy world.
8. Lord of the Sword
Our next adventure continues with Lord of the Sword. This game blends RPG elements with side-scrolling action.
You assume the role of Landau and thwart the evil Pazort’s plans by collecting magical crowns. The gameplay involves side-scrolling swordplay and exploration. On your journey, you’ll uncover the secrets of different regions.
What makes it a classic? Definitely for its unique blend of action and RPG. The catchy soundtrack totally enhances the gameplay. And there’s total satisfaction in mastering Landau’s sword techniques.
7. Dragon Crystal
Moving along, the next RPG in our list is Dragon Crystal. This turn based RPG takes place in a mythical world that has pulled the player in from the real world after looking at the Dragon Crystal.
This difficult RPG features some survival elements, such as the chance to starve to death. The player must pick up food from the ground regularly or die. The character’s appearance in game also updates when new types of gear are equipped.
The most unique feature is the dragon egg that hatches once the player gains enough levels. Afterward, the dragon travels with the player and grows with them.
6. Miracle Warriors: Seal of the Dark Lord
Embark on an epic quest with Miracle Warriors: Seal of the Dark Lord. This game epitomizes the classic dungeon-crawling RPG experience.
Your objective? Assemble a party of warriors and defeat the Dark Lord Terarin. The play involves turn-based battles, navigating dungeons, and gradually uncovering the secrets of the land.

Starting the top five on our RPG journey on the Master System is Golden Axe Warrior. This game takes the beloved beat ’em up franchise into the realm of action RPGs.
Your goal is to retrieve the nine crystals to defeat the evil Death Adder. The play involves top-down exploration and battling enemies. You’ll also collect items to enhance your character.
What sets it apart? The departure from the traditional Golden Axe formula. The engaging quest mirrors classic Zelda adventures. There’s also the nostalgic charm of revisiting the Golden Axe universe in a new light.
4. Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap
Prepare for a transformational journey with Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap. This game combines platforming with RPG elements.
You’re out to break the curse of the Meka Dragon. You’ll traverse various landscapes while transforming into different creatures. The gameplay involves side-scrolling platforming, defeating enemies, and discovering secrets.
Why do players revere it? For its charming art style and the variety of transformations that add strategic depth to gameplay. It’s hard to resist the nostalgic joy of revisiting this classic that has stood the test of time.
3. Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
Next in our best RPGs for the Sega Master System showcase is Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, a port of the same title released for personal computer systems.
You play as the Avatar, a stranger from Earth who travels once again to Britannia, this time to master the eight virtues and become a beacon of light. The game focuses on much more than just combat, and many future game developers were heavily influenced by the nuance and complexity of Ultima IV.
The Sega Master System port of this game is vastly preferred by Ultima fans than the NES port. For the Nintendo, the entire game was remade as a JRPG game, similar to Final Fantasy. The Sega port stays true to the original computer version. The main difference is the lack of first person view in dungeons and a simplified conversation system.
Personally, when I get the urge to play Ultima IV, the Sega port is my go-to.
2. Ys: The Vanished Omens
Almost equally deserving of the top slot, we have Ys: The Vanished Omens, also known as Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished and The Ancient Land of Ys. This action RPG blends fast-paced combat with a captivating story.
You assume the role of Adol Christin. You seek to unravel the mysteries behind the Vanished Omens that threaten the land of Esteria. The play is a mix of real-time combat, exploration, and leveling up Adol’s skills.
What makes it a gem? It earns high marks for its innovative “bump” combat system. The enchanting music remains a hallmark of the Ys series. In terms of sheer fun, the sense of adventure that permeates every moment.
1. Phantasy Star
Our quest begins with the iconic Phantasy Star. This game stands as a cornerstone in RPG history. It also showcases the technical prowess of the Master System.
You play Guide Alis on her quest to avenge her brother’s death. She aims to take down the tyrannical King Lassic. The gameplay combines turn-based battles and dungeon exploration. The unraveling sci-fi narrative was way ahead of its time.
What makes it #1? It’s a standout for its groundbreaking 3D dungeons. The game is also respected for the introduction of a female protagonist in a leading role. It’s engaging for a narrative that delves into political intrigue and rebellion.
