Ranking the Most Overhyped Quarterbacks in Every Division

The NFL is full of quarterback storylines, but not all of them live up to the hype. Every year, media buzz, fan delusion, and a couple of highlight throws can inflate a QB’s reputation way past reality.

That’s not to say these guys are terrible. They’re just getting a bit more love than their actual performance deserves, so let’s take a look at the most overhyped quarterback in every division.

AFC East: Tua Tagovailoa

Tua puts up nice numbers when everything is perfect, but the second things go off-script, so does he. The hype train rolls because of speedsters and scheme, not because he’s carrying the team.

AFC North: Deshaun Watson

At this point, people are clinging to 2019 highlights as if they were vintage wine. He hasn’t looked like a franchise QB in a long time, but you wouldn’t know it from the way some still talk about him.

AFC South: Trevor Lawrence

Everyone keeps waiting for the leap, but it’s starting to feel more like a myth than a destiny. He’s good—but “generational” feels like a stretch until he proves it consistently.

AFC West: Justin Herbert

Sep 23, 2017; Tempe, AZ, USA; Oregon Ducks quarterback Justin Herbert (10) looks to pass during the first half against the Arizona State Sun Devils at Sun Devil Stadium.

The tools are apparent, but the results just aren’t matching the hype yet. He’s got everything you want in a quarterback—except playoff wins and signature moments.

NFC East: Dak Prescott

Sep 19, 2015; Starkville, MS, USA; Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott (15) runs off the field after the game against Northwestern State Demons at Davis Wade Stadium. Mississippi State won 62-13.

Every year it’s “this is the year,” and every year ends in disappointment. He’s solid, but the way he’s talked about makes it seem like he’s in the elite tier, which he’s just not.

NFC North: Jordan Love

Packers fans are in a frenzy over Love, but pump the brakes. He’s promising, yes, but he’s still more potential than proven.

NFC South: Baker Mayfield

Aug 30, 2013; Dallas, TX, USA; Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) scores a touchdown in the fourth quarter of the game against the Southern Methodist Mustangs at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Texas Tech won 41-23.

Baker’s “comeback” narrative is fun, but let’s not pretend he’s suddenly become a top-tier QB. A couple of decades of seasons don’t erase years of inconsistency and chaos.

NFC West: Brock Purdy

Oct 13, 2018; Ames, IA, USA; Iowa State Cyclones quarterback Brock Purdy (15) runs the football against the West Virginia Mountaineers at Jack Trice Stadium.

He’s the ultimate system success story, but some folks talk about him like he’s the next Montana. He’s been solid, but let’s give more credit to the all-star cast around him.
