Ranking the 15 Pettiest Rivalries in NFL History

Not all NFL rivalries are built on historic matchups or Super Bowl implications. Some are fueled purely by salt, grudges, and the kind of pettiness you usually only see in reality TV.

Whether it’s fan bases trading insults online or teams going out of their way to troll each other, these rivalries thrive on drama. They might not always be the most meaningful matchups, but they are almost always the most entertaining.

15. Colts vs. Patriots

Dec 1, 2024; Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (5) scores a two point conversion during the second half against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium

It started with Peyton vs. Brady, but even after those guys left, the bitterness lingered. From fake punts to Deflategate, this one got weird and stayed weird.

14. Giants vs. Commanders

Sep 15, 2024; Landover, Maryland, USA; New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers (1) reaches for a first down during the fourth quarter against the Washington Commanders at Commanders Field.

They’ve both been mediocre for most of the last decade, but that hasn’t stopped the shade. Whether it’s stadium name jokes or fan fights, these two can’t resist poking each other.

13. Vikings vs. Packers

Dec 29, 2024; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Green Bay Packers running back Emanuel Wilson (31) scores a touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings during the fourth quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium.

This one feels like a never-ending family feud in the Midwest. Packers fans never let the Vikings forget their empty trophy case, and Vikings fans never stop reminding the Packers they live in Wisconsin.

12. Texans vs. Titans

The Titans used to be the Oilers, and Texans fans have never gotten over it. Add in a bunch of petty social media jabs, and you’ve got a rivalry fueled by relocation resentment.

11. Rams vs. 49ers

Sep 17, 2023; Inglewood, California, USA; San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel (19) runs through the Los Angeles Rams defense for a touchdown in the second half at SoFi Stadium.

The games are intense, but the real pettiness happens off the field. Whether it’s ticket restrictions or subtle shade from coaches, these teams love getting under each other’s skin.

10. Jets vs. Patriots

Oct 27, 2024; Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; The New England Patriots react after a touchdown by running back Rhamondre Stevenson (38) (not pictured) against the New York Jets in the second half at Gillette Stadium

The Patriots dominated for years, but the Jets still find ways to get under their skin. From “seeing ghosts” to coach firings and press conference jabs, it’s always spicy.

9. Steelers vs. Browns

Dec 8, 2024; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Steelers running back Jaylen Warren (30) battles Cleveland Browns defenders Denzel Ward (21) and Ronnie Hickman (33) for extra yardage during the fourth quarter at Acrisure Stadium
Barry Reeger-Imagn Images

The Browns were bad for so long that it shouldn’t have been a rivalry, but don’t tell that to either fan base. Every tiny Browns win is celebrated like a Super Bowl, and every Steelers loss is meme’d into oblivion.

8. Seahawks vs. 49ers

November 17, 2024; Santa Clara, California, USA; Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III (9) scores a touchdown during the third quarter against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium
Kyle Terada-Imagn Images

This one got extra petty during the Legion of Boom era. From Richard Sherman’s postgame tirades to sideline fights, this rivalry was personal.

7. Cowboys vs. 49ers

Oct 27, 2024; Santa Clara, California, USA; San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle (85) runs with the football against Dallas Cowboys safety Malik Hooker (28) during the second quarter at Levi's Stadium

Two classic franchises that just plain hate each other. Every playoff game reignites the trash talk and the pettiness that comes with it.

6. Eagles vs. Giants

Jan 21, 2023; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (1) looks to pass in the first quarter against the New York Giants during an NFC divisional round game at Lincoln Financial Field.

Philly and New York don’t like each other in any sport, and the NFL is no exception. From miracle plays to media wars, these two always find something to fight about.

5. Bears vs. Packers

Nov 17, 2024; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs (8) runs against the Chicago Bears during the first half at Soldier Field.
David Banks-Imag Images

This one’s old, but the pettiness feels brand new every season. Aaron Rodgers yelling “I own you” to Chicago fans is the perfect summary.

4. Ravens vs. Steelers

Jan 11, 2025; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (8) reacts in the fourth quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers in an AFC wild card game at M&T Bank Stadium
Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images

They’ve had brutal games, but the pettiness comes in the form of constant smack talk and cheap shots. It’s never just a game with these two—it’s a grudge match.

A shared love of chaos fuels this one. Philly fans live to troll Dallas, and Cowboys fans dish it right back, whether their team is good or not.

Stephen Lew-Imagn Images

The NFL’s pettiest rivalry, hands down. These fan bases would argue over who invented gumbo if it meant getting under each other’s skin.
