23 Athletes Who Thought They Were Bigger Than the Game

Some athletes get so good, so rich, and so famous that they start to believe the sport revolves around them. They talk like icons, act like legends, and walk around like the rulebook is for everybody else.

But sooner or later, the game reminds them who’s really in charge. Whether it’s off-field drama, public power struggles, or just wildly inflated egos, these athletes learned (sometimes the hard way) that no one is untouchable.

23. Kyrie Irving

Mar 1, 2025; Dallas, Texas, USA; Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving (11) dribbles as Milwaukee Bucks forward Taurean Prince (12) defends during the first half at American Airlines Center.
Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images

From flat-earth theories to random absences, Kyrie has often behaved like the NBA is a side quest. His talent is undeniable, but the drama sometimes overshadows the buckets.

22. Antonio Brown

Jan 9, 2021; Landover, Maryland, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown (81) catches a touchdown pass as Washington Football Team cornerback Jimmy Moreland (20) chases in the second quarter at FedExField.
Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

At one point, he was the best receiver in the NFL. Then came the frostbitten feet, helmet battles, and a rap career no one asked for.

21. Ronda Rousey

sJul 2, 2022; Las Vegas, NV, USA; Ronda Rousey (black attire) and Natalya (green attire) battle during the Smackdown Women s Championship match at Money In The Bank at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images

She was the face of women’s MMA—until she got too caught up in being Hollywood’s next big thing. When the losses came, so did the humility check.

20. Jalen Ramsey

Jan 7, 2018; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey (20) gets pumped up works out prior to the the AFC Wild Card playoff football game against the Buffalo Bills at EverBank Field.
Kim Klement-Imagn Images

He once showed up to training camp in a Brinks truck, which pretty much tells you everything. Confidence is good, but Ramsey’s swagger sometimes eclipses the team goals.

19. Cam Newton

Jan 26, 2012; Honolulu, HI, USA; Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1) throws a pass at NFC practice for the 2012 Pro Bowl at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

No one made fashion statements quite like Cam. Unfortunately, the outfits kept getting bolder while the stats got quieter.

18. James Harden

May 1, 2025; Inglewood, California, USA; LA Clippers guard James Harden (1) and Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray (27) battle for the ball in the second half during game six of first round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Intuit Dome.
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

Harden loves the ball in his hands and the spotlight on his beard. But once things stopped going his way, he started jumping ship like it was an Olympic sport.

17. Johnny Manziel

Sep 21, 2013; College Station, TX, USA; Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel (2) against the SMU Mustangs in the second half at Kyle Field.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

“Johnny Football” was more of a celebrity than a quarterback. He lived like he’d already made it before even earning a real shot in the league.

16. Russell Westbrook

Dec 14, 2016; Salt Lake City, UT, USA; Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook (0) passes the ball from under the basket during the first quarter against the Utah Jazz at Vivint Smart Home Arena.
Russ Isabella-Imagn Images

Triple-doubles became his brand, but so did icy postgame interviews and defiant quotes. He’s electric, but he often plays like he’s got something to prove—mostly to himself.

15. Terrell Owens

Sept 17, 2006; Irving, TX USA; Dallas Cowboys wide receiver (81) Terrell Owens is unable to catch the pass during the first quarter against the Washington Redskins at Texas Stadium.
Tim Heitman-Imagn Images

T.O. put up monster numbers, then turned the team locker rooms into soap operas. When you bring pom-poms to a touchdown celebration, you’re not exactly flying under the radar.

14. Conor McGregor

March 5, 2016; Las Vegas, NV, USA; Conor McGregor during UFC 196 at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

McGregor’s mouth sometimes moves faster than his fists. He crossed into full spectacle mode, where the drama sells more than the actual fighting.

13. Brett Favre

November 21, 2005; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback #4 Brett Favre eludes the grasp of Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle #93 Kevin Williams as Green Bay Packers tackle #65 Mark Tauscher looks on during the third quarter at Lambeau Field.
Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images

The never-ending retirements, the unretirements, and the drama in between—Favre played the NFL like a soap opera. At times, it felt like the league had to adjust to him, not the other way around.

12. Aaron Rodgers

Sep 21, 2010; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) looks to throw a pass during the game against the Miami Dolphins at Lambeau Field. The Dolphins defeated the Packers 23-20.
Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images

Once a beloved Green Bay icon, Rodgers morphed into the league’s unofficial philosopher. The more he talked about darkness retreats, the less he seemed focused on football.

11. Alex Rodriguez

Jun 22, 2007; San Francisco, CA, USA; New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez (13) throws to first base after catching a grounder during the 7th inning against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park in San Francisco, CA. The Yankees defeated the Giants 7-3.
Kyle Terada-Imagn Images

A-Rod’s talent was never in doubt, but his ego was just as massive. Between the steroid scandals and his desperate attempts at image rehab, he always felt a step removed from the team.

10. Deion Sanders

Prime Time was his own brand—flashy, loud, and always on. He made football (and baseball) his stage, and sometimes it seemed like the team was just his supporting cast.

9. Dennis Rodman

Unknown Date 1992; Auburn Hills, MI, USA; FILE PHOTO; Detroit Pistons forward #10 DENNIS RODMAN in action against the Chicago Bulls at the Palace of Auburn Hills during the 1991-92 season.

Rodman’s game was gritty, but his off-court antics were pure chaos. North Korea, wedding dresses, Vegas benders—basketball always felt like part of the sideshow.

8. Baker Mayfield

Aug 17, 2019; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) on the field warming up before the game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images

Baker came into the league ready to conquer, with commercials rolling before the wins ever did. The swagger was there, but the consistency wasn’t.

7. Floyd Mayweather

Jun 6, 2021; Miami, Florida, USA; Floyd Mayweather Jr. (Green Trunks) stands in the ring prior to his fight against Logan Paul (not pictured) at Hard Rock Stadium.
Jasen Vinlove-Imagn Images

He’s undefeated in the ring, but the self-promotion machine might be even stronger. From money showers to exhibition fights, Mayweather’s brand is himself first, boxing second.

6. Ricky Williams

Jan 1, 2012; Cincinnati, OH USA; Baltimore Ravens running back Ricky Williams (34) runs against Cincinnati Bengals outside linebacker Thomas Howard (53) during the second half at Paul Brown Stadium. The Ravens won 24-16.
David Kohl-Imagn Images

Williams walked away from the NFL in his prime to find himself. Admirable? Sure. But it also screamed, “I’m done playing by your rules.”

5. Ja Morant

Jan 5, 2020; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant (12) dribbles against the Phoenix Suns during the first half at Talking Stick Resort Arena.
Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images

Ja had the league in his hands, then nearly fumbled it, flashing guns on Instagram. The game was ready to make him a star, but he tried to write his own chaotic script.

4. Jose Canseco

1995, Boston, MA, USA; FILE PHOTO; Boston Red Sox designated hitter Jose Canseco in action at the plate at Fenway Park during the 1995 season.
RVR Photos-Imagn Images

No one self-sabotaged quite like Canseco. He juiced, wrote a tell-all, and made himself the face of baseball’s steroid era—because apparently infamy is better than being forgotten.

3. Colin Kaepernick

Jan 20, 2013; Atlanta, GA, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) throws in the pocket against the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game at the Georgia Dome. The 49ers won 28-24.
Matthew Emmons-Imagn Images

He became bigger than football, for better or worse. At some point, the discussion shifted so far beyond the game that returning to it felt like a footnote.

2. Lance Armstrong

Feb. 22, 2009; Escondido, CA, USA; Astana rider Lance Armstrong make his way up one of the many climbs of Palomar Mountain during the eighth stage of the 2009 Tour of California in Escondido, CA.
Christopher Hanewinckel-Imagn Images

Armstrong didn’t just win—he dominated, controlled, and crushed anyone in his way. But the fall from grace was just as epic once the truth caught up.

1. LeBron James

Apr 30, 2025; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (23) controls the ball against Minnesota Timberwolves guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker (9) during the first half in game five of first round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Crypto.com Arena.
Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

LeBron runs the court—and the narrative. From “The Decision” to building superteams, he’s often acted like the league should orbit around him, and to be fair, sometimes it has.
