Ranking the 25 Most Hated Pitchers by Opposing Fans

Pitchers are supposed to be the villains. They’re the ones trying to ruin your team’s fun, and sometimes, they do it with such arrogance or dominance that fans just can’t stand them. And then there are the ones who stir the pot, flip the bird (sometimes literally), or simply embrace being the bad guy.

From headhunters and trash-talkers to postseason villains and smug mound-dwellers, these 25 pitchers built reputations as the guys fans loved to boo. Whether it was their attitude, antics, or just how often they shut your team down, here are the most hated pitchers by opposing fanbases.

25. Brian Wilson

May 7, 2011; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Brian Wilson (38) delivers a pitch against the Colorado Rockies during the ninth inning at AT&T Park. The Giants defeated the Rockies 3-2.

The beard was iconic, but the theatrics got old fast for opposing fans. He looked like a pro wrestler cosplaying as a closer.

24. Marcus Stroman

Apr 11, 2025; Bronx, New York, USA; New York Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Stroman (0) delivers a pitch during the first inning against the San Francisco Giants at Yankee Stadium.
Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

He’s confident and never shy about letting hitters know when he gets them out. But to fans on the other side, it comes off as straight-up cocky.

23. John Rocker

Jul 26, 2014; Cooperstown, NY, USA; Atlanta Braves former pitcher John Rocker poses for a picture at National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

There’s being hated for dominance, and then there’s being hated for literally everything else. Rocker earned his spot through offensive comments, not strikeouts.

22. Jonathan Papelbon

May 1, 2012; Atlanta, GA, USA; Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon (58) reacts after recording the last out against the Atlanta Braves during the ninth inning at Turner Field. The Phillies defeated the Braves 4-2.
Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

The celebrations were aggressive, and the attitude was worse. Nobody outside of Boston (or Philly, briefly) enjoyed his vibe.

21. Matt Garza

Aug 13, 2017; Milwaukee, WI, USA; Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Matt Garza (22) throws a pitch in the first inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park.

He was fiery, confrontational, and never afraid to stir the pot. Fans always felt like he was one bad pitch away from a full-on meltdown.

20. Roger Clemens

One of the greatest ever, but also one of the most disliked. From beanball wars to PED controversies, fans had plenty of reasons to boo.

19. Ryan Dempster

Jun 17, 2009; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Ryan Dempster (46) delivers a pitch during the fourth inning against the Chicago White Sox at Wrigley Field. The White Sox won 4-1.

Normally a likable guy, until he decided to go headhunting against A-Rod. That one moment was enough to make Yankee fans lifelong haters.

18. Jose Valverde

Apr 29, 2014; Philadelphia, PA, USA; New York Mets relief pitcher Jose Valverde (47) pitches during the ninth inning of the game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The New York Mets won the game 6-1.

The stomping, the yelling, the animated antics—it was all too much for anyone not rooting for his team. He treated every save like Game 7 of the World Series.

17. Max Scherzer

Mar 29, 2025; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer (31) delivers a pitch against the Baltimore Orioles in the first inning at Rogers Centre.
Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images

Insanely intense and hyper-competitive, Scherzer’s mound stare alone could annoy a fanbase. Especially when he’s striking out 12 of your guys while doing it.

16. Zack Greinke

Aug 31, 2018; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zack Greinke (21) reacts after hitting Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner (not pictured) on a pitch during the fifth inning at Dodger Stadium.
Kelvin Kuo-Imagn Images

Socially awkward and brutally honest, Greinke doesn’t care if fans like him. And that attitude makes him an easy villain for opposing crowds.

15. Yordano Ventura

Sep 12, 2014; Kansas City, MO, USA; Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura (30) delivers a pitch against the Boston Red Sox during the first inning at Kauffman Stadium.
Peter G. Aiken-Imagn Images

Gone too soon, but not before building a reputation as a firestarter. His on-field feuds turned him into a public enemy on more than one team’s radar.

14. Pedro Martinez

October 16, 2009; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Pedro Martinez (45) prepares to deliver a pitch during the sixth inning of game two of the 2009 NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
Christopher Hanewinckel-Imagn Images

Dominant, yes. But between throwing Don Zimmer and drilling hitters with zero remorse, Pedro played the villain role well.

13. Josh Beckett

August 3, 2014; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Josh Beckett (61) pitches the first inning against the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium.
Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

Cocky, intense, and unapologetic. If he wasn’t dominating your team in October, he was staring someone down or chirping from the dugout.

12. Johnny Cueto

Aug 21, 2024; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Johnny Cueto (36) pitches during the second inning against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images

Between his funky delivery and on-field antics, Cueto could get under anyone’s skin. Just ask Pirates fans after that 2015 Wild Card game.

11. Trevor Bauer

Jun 18, 2021; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer reacts against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Whether it was drones, YouTube vlogs, or Twitter beefs, Bauer made sure fans knew exactly who he was—and many hated every second of it. He gave villain energy before it was trendy.

10. Chris Carpenter

October 7, 2009; Los Angeles, CA, USA; St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter (29) pitches in the third inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers during game one of the 2009 NLDS at Dodger Stadium.

Always barking, always glaring, and always right on the edge of boiling over. Opposing fans knew a Carpenter start came with drama.

9. Randy Johnson

Apr. 14, 2008; San Francisco, CA, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Randy Johnson (51) pitches against the San Francisco Giants during the 1st inning at AT&T Park in San Francisco, CA. The Giants defeated the Diamondbacks 5-4.
Kyle Terada-Imagn Images

The intimidation was off the charts, and he barely acknowledged opponents. He didn’t trash talk, he just made you look dumb—and fans resented how easily he did it.

8. Michael Kopech

Oct 12, 2021; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Michael Kopech (34) pitches against the Houston Astros during the fourth inning in game four of the 2021 ALDS at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Matt Marton-Imagn Images

He throws hard and isn’t afraid to show emotion, but it often feels forced. Combine that with some inconsistent results, and you’ve got a guy fans love to jeer.

7. Ken Giles

Apr 13, 2016; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Astros relief pitcher Ken Giles (53) delivers a pitch during the eighth inning against the Kansas City Royals at Minute Maid Park.
Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

Punching himself in the face kind of summed up the chaos. Whether he was blowing saves or yelling at teammates, he never made himself easy to root for.

6. Aroldis Chapman

Jun 24, 2025; Anaheim, California, USA; Boston Red Sox pitcher Aroldis Chapman (44) throws against the Los Angeles Angels during the ninth inning at Angel Stadium.

5. Rob Dibble

Elite talent, postseason legend, and the king of giving fans secondhand embarrassment off the field. Even before his post-career controversies, Schilling’s attitude and self-importance rubbed plenty of fans the wrong way.
