Devin Williams Facing Backlash for Comments After Yankees Loss
The New York Yankees nearly pulled off a miracle comeback Wednesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays, rallying from an 8-0 deficit to tie the game 9-9 in the eighth inning. But the momentum didn’t last.
Reliever Devin Williams took the mound in the bottom of the eighth and quickly recorded a strikeout before walking George Springer and issuing an intentional walk to Vladimir Guerrero Jr.. A sac fly advanced the runners, and a wild pitch from Williams allowed Springer to score. Addison Barger then singled in another run, giving the Blue Jays an 11-9 lead they wouldn’t surrender.

Williams’ Comments Spark Fan Outrage
After the game, Williams explained the meltdown:
“Yeah, I let Springer get away from me there… Sac fly, we got two outs… Barger hit a pitch that was out of the zone.”
But it was his comment on the intentional walk to Guerrero that drew heat:
“That’s not my decision.”
Yankees fans were not pleased. On social media, many criticized Williams’ attitude and performance:
- “This dude is not the guy you want holding the ball in a close game.”
- “He doesn’t look like he wants to be here tbh.”
- “Pinstripes aren’t for him.”
Some even speculated that Williams is just riding out the season until he hits free agency.
Trouble Brewing in the Bronx?
Williams, who now sports a 5.17 ERA and a 2-3 record, has had an up-and-down year in New York. While his changeup remains elite, opposing teams seem to be adjusting, and fans are beginning to lose patience.
With playoff pressure mounting, Williams and the Yankees will need to regroup fast or face a much louder Bronx crowd.
