Baker Mayfield Reacts to NFL’s New Game-Day Ban

Baker Mayfield Jokes About NFL’s Smelling Salts Ban

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is no stranger to viral moments. And he’s added another to the list following the NFL’s latest rule change.

The league recently banned the use of smelling salts, citing health concerns. In a memo to teams, the NFL explained that smelling salts could potentially mask signs of a concussion, an issue the league is taking more seriously than ever.

For Mayfield, though, the ban hits close to home. Known for using them as part of his pre-snap routine to stay locked in, Mayfield admitted he’s not thrilled by the move.

During an interview on the Up & Adams Show, the veteran QB offered a candid and hilarious reaction:

“Now you just gotta bring your own juice to the party,” he said. “I’m going to be severely affected, to be honest with you.”
When asked what might replace smelling salts, Mayfield didn’t miss a beat: “Just more headbutts.”

Mayfield Coming Off Career-Best Season

Despite the ban, Mayfield’s impact in Tampa Bay remains undeniable. Since arriving in 2023, he’s guided the Bucs to back-to-back playoff appearances. And silenced many of the doubts that surrounded him earlier in his career.

Last season, he put up career-best numbers, completing 71.4% of his passes for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and just 16 interceptions. He also added 378 rushing yards and three scores on the ground.

Now 30, Mayfield appears settled and confident heading into the 2025 season. And while he may have to find a new way to fire himself up on game days, one thing’s for sure — he’s still bringing the energy.
