College football is all about the atmosphere, loud crowds, tailgates that start at sunrise, and stadiums rocking with school spirit. But not every program has a packed house on Saturdays, and some teams are working overtime just to get fans through the gate.
Whether it’s due to long losing streaks, inconvenient locations, or just too many other things to do on the weekend, these programs consistently see way too many empty seats. From once-proud schools now facing apathy to smaller programs fighting for attention, here are 15 college football teams that just can’t seem to fill their stadiums.
15. Arizona Wildcats

Tucson loves its basketball, but football Saturdays don’t always hit the same. Despite some recent improvements, the Wildcats often play to a sea of empty red seats.
14. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Right in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia Tech struggles to compete with everything else the city offers. Unless a powerhouse like Georgia or Clemson is in town, the buzz is pretty mild.
13. Vanderbilt Commodores

In the SEC, football is a religion, except in Nashville. Vandy’s stadium often looks more like a library than a battlefield on game day.
12. UConn Huskies

Once known more for hoops than hits, UConn football hasn’t inspired a ton of loyalty. The stands tend to mirror the scoreboard, sparse and underwhelming.
11. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

The team is often solid, but the turnout rarely matches the product. With a small fanbase and stiff local competition, Wake’s home crowds are usually tame.
10. San Jose State Spartans

Bay Area fans just don’t flock to San Jose State games, no matter how competitive the team is. The stadium often feels more like a practice scrimmage than a game day event.
9. Indiana Hoosiers

Basketball still reigns supreme in Bloomington. Even when Indiana football shows promise, Memorial Stadium doesn’t exactly fill up with believers.
8. Rice Owls

Rice plays in one of the most populous cities in the country, but the seats remain stubbornly empty. Winning seasons are rare, and so are rowdy home crowds.
7. New Mexico Lobos

The desert setting is picturesque, but the stands are anything but packed. Fan engagement has been low for years, even when expectations are high.
6. Ball State Cardinals

Muncie isn’t exactly a college football destination. Despite some solid seasons, the attendance numbers just never quite follow.
5. Akron Zips

It’s hard to fill a stadium when wins are few and far between. The Zips have struggled on the field, and their attendance reflects it.
4. Northern Illinois Huskies

Even with MAC championships on the resume, NIU can’t seem to drum up consistent fan energy. DeKalb crowds have thinned out more and more over the years.
3. UMass Minutemen

The program has had a rough go since moving to FBS, and the stands have never really filled up. Home games often feel like neutral-site matchups with low energy.
