Courtney Williams Shuts Down Sophie Cunningham Hate During WNBA All-Star Weekend

Sophie Cunningham Sparks Controversy, But Courtney Williams Has Her Back

Sophie Cunningham has always played with fire. And this WNBA season, that heat’s been turned all the way up. Since joining the Indiana Fever, the veteran guard has faced a tidal wave of both support and criticism. Whether it’s her physicality on the court or her outspoken opinions off it, Cunningham is fast becoming one of the league’s most polarizing figures.

It started with her tough-as-nails defense, most notably the June 17 game when she sent Jacy Sheldon to the floor after Sheldon allegedly poked Caitlin Clark in the eye. Then came her recent comments questioning the WNBA’s expansion to Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia, which lit up social media yet again.

But not everyone is joining the dogpile. During WNBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis. Courtney Williams of the Minnesota Lynx made it crystal clear, Cunningham isn’t fighting this alone.

“We Is Not Playing That”: Williams Steps In

During a Twitch livestream with teammate Natisha Hiedeman, Williams ran into Cunningham. And immediately came to her defense in front of thousands of viewers.

“All my mods, if anyone got anything bad to say about Sophie in a negative way, put they [expletive] in timeout. Straight up,” Williams said.

She didn’t stop there.

“Ban them right now. We in Indiana man, ain’t nothing but love.”

Williams and Hiedeman, known as the Studbudz duo, added that negativity toward any WNBA player would not be tolerated on their channel throughout the weekend.

Whether you love her or not, Sophie Cunningham’s presence is being felt. And that’s exactly what stars like Courtney Williams want to protect. As the WNBA grows in visibility, the players are standing up for each other louder than ever.

And in a league built on passion, grit, and sisterhood, that kind of loyalty deserves just as much airtime as the game highlights.
