Hamlin’s Broadcast Stint Falls Flat
Denny Hamlin may have claimed his 58th career Cup Series win at Dover, but his side hustle as a commentator stirred just as much buzz. The veteran driver joined the CW’s NASCAR Xfinity Series broadcast team ahead of the weekend race. While fans expected him to shine, Hamlin himself admits it didn’t go quite as planned.
In the latest episode of his Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin shared how chaotic and limiting the experience really was. He debunked the idea that being in the booth gave him an edge for Sunday’s race, stating, “It’s not an advantage at all to go up there and do the booth.” According to Hamlin, he sees more from the comfort of his motorhome than from a production-heavy broadcast booth.

The Harsh Reality of Live TV for Racers
What sounded like a perfect crossover, driver turned analyst—turned out to be a tough ride. Hamlin detailed the distractions of working with producers in his ear and the fast-paced format that left no room for technical analysis. “You’ve got something good you want to say… [but] you’ve got to throw it out the window and go with what’s on the screen,” he admitted.
Even so, Hamlin praised veterans like Adam Alexander and Jamie Little for their poise and chemistry. “Adam makes it so freaking easy,” he said, adding that he’d still consider returning to the booth despite the steep learning curve.
Eyes on 60: Hamlin’s Bigger Picture in NASCAR
At 44, Denny Hamlin is still chasing milestones. With 58 career Cup wins, he’s aiming for 60, a number reached by only a select few like Kevin Harvick. Off the track, he’s just as impactful. As co-owner of 23XI Racing with Michael Jordan, Hamlin is shaping the future of NASCAR while still gunning for his first championship.
Balancing driving, ownership, and now commentary, Hamlin isn’t slowing down, he’s expanding. Whether or not he becomes a broadcast mainstay, one thing’s certain: he’ll remain a major force in NASCAR, both behind the wheel and beyond it.
