Feds Say Stolen Memorabilia Was Worth Millions
In a shocking twist that sounds straight out of a sports crime drama, a former Miami Heat security guard has been charged with stealing hundreds of valuable memorabilia items, including LeBron James’s jersey from Game 7 of the 2013 NBA Finals.
Marcos Thomas Perez, 62, was arrested and charged with transporting and selling stolen goods across state lines, according to a statement from the Southern District of Florida. The former staffer allegedly took advantage of his insider access while working with both the Miami Heat (2016–2021) and the NBA (2022–2025) to sneak items out of a secure team equipment room over several years.
Among the most high-profile items allegedly stolen? The very jersey worn by LeBron James during the Heat’s 95–88 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. A game where LeBron dropped 37 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to clinch the 2013 title.
Over 300 Miami Heat Jerseys Recovered in FBI Raid
Authorities say they executed a search warrant at Perez’s residence on April 3. Further uncovering over 300 jerseys in what they’re calling one of the largest sports memorabilia theft cases in recent memory.
The combined value of the items? Estimated in the millions. And while investigators haven’t released the full list of recovered gear, LeBron’s jersey alone could be worth a fortune on the open market.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office noted that Perez made his initial court appearance this week. If convicted, he faces serious prison time.
As the investigation continues, both the NBA and the Miami Heat have yet to issue public comments on the case.
