Even while sidelined since July 15, Caitlin Clark remains a centerpiece in WNBA debates.
During the Indiana Fever’s Friday night win over the Dallas Wings, in which Kelsey Mitchell dropped 23 points, a controversial on-air moment stole the spotlight. Analyst Tiffany Bias Pelton, speaking on ION’s broadcast, sparked backlash after comparing Paige Bueckers’ rookie season to Clark’s.
Bueckers, who’s been solid for Dallas, is averaging 18.5 points and 5.5 assists per game. Clark, in her debut year, posted 19.2 points and 8.4 assists, leading the entire league in assists.

Despite having those numbers displayed on screen, Pelton commented, “You can tell they are two different styles of players. Paige is getting people involved. Caitlin’s more looking for her shot.”
Fans were quick to call her out.
“Caitlin Clark broke the LEAGUE record for most assists her rookie year and they still won’t call her a playmaker,” one fan tweeted.
Another added, “You can’t lead the league in assists if you’re only looking for your shot. This take makes no sense.”
While many acknowledged Bueckers’ midrange skill and quick release, fans argued that comparing her playmaking to Caitlin Clark’s simply isn’t accurate especially with the numbers right there.
A frustrated fan summed it up: “Like can they not read?! The assists stats are right in front of their face.”
The debate highlights a larger issue in sports commentary, sometimes, hot takes overshadow hard stats.
