Caitlin Clark’s return to the lineup didn’t go as planned for the Indiana Fever. After missing five games due to a groin injury, the phenom was back on the floor Wednesday night. But the Fever were blown out 80-61 by the surging Golden State Valkyries. And while Clark’s modest stat line—10 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists raised eyebrows, head coach Stephanie White’s decision to shake up the starting lineup drew just as much attention.
White started Aari McDonald in place of Lexie Hull, giving Indiana two point guards on the floor at the same time. The move pushed Clark off the ball more frequently than usual, an interesting adjustment coming off an injury. While the Fever went 3-2 without Caitlin Clark, including a Commissioner’s Cup title, her return was expected to ignite the offense. That didn’t happen.

Why Fever Made the Change
Speaking to reporters postgame, White justified her decision. “I like the ability to have two primary ball handlers on the floor,” she said. “Being able to give the opponent different looks. Quite frankly, for Caitlin, especially not having to have her play under duress 94 feet… We’ll continue to work on that.”

McDonald has played well in Caitlin Clark’s absence, averaging 10.3 points and 4.4 assists. Her poise and speed have added a new dynamic to Indiana’s backcourt. White’s decision may also reflect a desire to reduce Clark’s workload as she ramps back up to full speed.
The Fever are now 1-3 in their five-game homestand and drop to 9-10 on the season. With the Atlanta Dream up next on Friday, it remains to be seen whether White will stick with the McDonald-Clark backcourt or return to her original starting five.
One thing is clear: Caitlin Clark’s minutes and usage are under a microscope, and every decision will be debated as the Fever fight for playoff relevance.
