15 ‘Franchise’ NFL Players Who Weren’t Even Starter Material

Some NFL teams will convince themselves that they’ve found “The Guy” at quarterback. Or running back. Or tight end. But too often, that “franchise cornerstone” ends up riding the bench while fans are left wondering what the front office ever saw in them.

These are the players who were hyped as the next face of the franchise, only to flame out so badly that they barely qualified as serviceable starters. From quarterbacks who never won a job to skill guys who couldn’t live up to the marketing campaign, here are 15 NFL players who were crowned before they even proved they belonged.

15. Josh Rosen

Sep 3, 2017; Pasadena, CA, USA; UCLA Bruins quarterback Josh Rosen (3) celebrates after the game against the Texas A&M Aggies during a NCAA football game at Rose Bowl. UCLA defeated Texas A&M 45-44.

Drafted high, handed the keys, and then… completely ghosted. The league gave him every shot, and he still couldn’t hold down a backup role, let alone be the guy.

14. Dwayne Haskins

Sep 15, 2018; Arlington, TX, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Dwayne Haskins (7) throws prior to the game against the Texas Christian Horned Frogs at AT&T Stadium.

Washington sold him as the future, but the future never showed up. Accuracy issues, leadership questions, and zero traction made his stay short.

13. Trent Richardson

Jan 9, 2012; New Orleans, LA, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide running back Trent Richardson (3) celebrates after scoring a touchdown during the second half of the 2012 BCS National Championship game against the LSU Tigers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

He was supposed to be Cleveland’s bulldozing, franchise-changing back. Instead, he was traded mid-rookie deal and couldn’t even find the right running lanes.

12. Paxton Lynch

Mar 5, 2023; Arlington, TX, USA; Orlando Guardians quarterback Paxton Lynch (6) throws a pass during the first half against the Arlington Renegades at Choctaw Stadium.

Tall, athletic, and completely unplayable. Denver hoped he’d be their QB savior, but he couldn’t even win a preseason job.

11. Blake Bortles

Oct 11, 2015; Tampa, FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles (5) drops to throw a pass during the second quarter of an NFL football game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.

He technically started for a few seasons, but let’s be honest—it always felt like a placeholder situation. Jacksonville tried to pretend he was the answer, but the league knew better.

10. Justin Blackmon

Aug 24, 2017; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon (14) runs for a first down during the second half of an NFL football game against the Carolina Panthers at EverBank Field.

Incredible college talent, but his NFL career never even got off the runway. Off-field issues kept him from being more than a footnote.

9. Zach Wilson

Oct 3, 2021; East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA; New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson (2) throws the ball against the Tennessee Titans during the first half at MetLife Stadium.

Drafted to lead the Jets out of misery and ended up buried on the depth chart. The only consistent part of his game was inconsistency.

8. Kevin White

Aug 11, 2016; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White (13) during the first quarter against the Denver Broncos at Soldier Field.

All the physical tools, none of the availability. He was sold as a WR1 and ended up a permanent injury report fixture.

7. Brady Quinn

Aug 16, 2014; Tampa, FL, USA; Miami Dolphins quarterback Brady Quinn (7) calls a play during the second half against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. Miami won 20-14.

The media hype was louder than any throws he made in the NFL. Multiple teams gave him a shot, and he never looked like a true starter.

6. David Carr

Dec 4, 2005; Baltimore, MD, USA; Houston Texans quarterback David Carr (8) throws under pressure to wide receiver Andre Johnson (80) during 1st half action of the Texans matchup with the Baltimore Ravens at M & T Bank Stadium.

He had the look, the arm, and the draft status—but never the performance. Yes, Houston’s line was a disaster, but even after that, he never rebounded elsewhere.

5. DeShone Kizer

Aug 15, 2019; Baltimore, MD, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback DeShone Kizer (9) throws before the game against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

Cleveland hoped they’d found a diamond in the rough. Turns out it was just… rough.

4. Christian Hackenberg

Aug 26, 2017; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; New York Jets quarterback Christian Hackenberg (5) runs with the ball against the New York Giants during the second quarter of a preseason game at MetLife Stadium.

Second-round pick, zero regular-season passes. The Jets somehow talked themselves into a prospect no coach could even get on the field.

3. Freddie Mitchell

Feb 06, 2005; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Philadelphia Eagles receiver Freddie Mitchell (84) is hit by New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi (54) and Roman Phifer (95) during Super Bowl XXXIX at Alltel Stadium. The Patriots won the game 24-21.

He gave himself the nickname “First Down Freddie.” Unfortunately, he rarely got those first downs or much playing time at all.

1. JaMarcus Russell

Touted as a generational arm talent and given a massive rookie deal. Then he showed up out of shape and out of his depth—possibly the biggest bust of all time.
