Gleyber Torres Just Added Fuel to Brian Cashman’s Yankees Controversy

Torres’ All-Star Nod Sparks New Criticism of Yankees Cashman

The New York Yankees have officially lost control of the AL East and, perhaps more critically, the confidence of their fanbase. After a third straight loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, frustration with GM Brian Cashman is boiling over. And former Yankee Gleyber Torres just tossed gasoline on the fire.

A viral 2023 clip shows Cashman defending young shortstop Anthony Volpe, claiming he was poised for an offensive breakout. That prediction hasn’t aged well. Volpe’s 2025 season has been riddled with errors (11 so far), and he’s barely hovering above the Mendoza line. Still, Cashman’s unwavering support remains. Meanwhile, Torres, who never received such loyalty, is thriving in Detroit, and will now start the All-Star Game as a Tiger.

Double Standards and a Departing Star’s Quiet Jab

Torres’ All-Star announcement included a subtle, stinging message: he thanked the Tigers and their fans for the “support” he’d “never felt more strongly than now.” That statement resonated deeply with Yankees fans still puzzled over why the former top prospect was let go, despite better numbers and experience than Volpe.

Cashman’s past criticism didn’t help. Last winter, the GM threw Torres under the bus. Blaming him for resisting a switch to third base in favor of newly acquired Jazz Chisholm. “Gleyber didn’t want to move to third and was unwilling,” Cashman said. Torres, staying classy, responded by reiterating that he sees himself as a second baseman. A role he’s excelled in for the Tigers.

Torres Thriving, Volpe Struggling

Torres is far from perfect defensively, but he’s committed fewer errors in Detroit and is producing consistently at the plate. The Tigers built around his strengths — something the Yankees failed to do.

For many fans, this double standard highlights a deeper problem: Cashman’s unwillingness to admit when he’s wrong. Volpe, seen as “his guy,” continues to get the benefit of the doubt. Torres never did, and now he’s proving them wrong on baseball’s biggest stage.
