17 Guys Who Acted Like Franchise Quarterbacks (But Definitely Weren’t)

Being a true franchise quarterback takes more than just a strong arm and a few viral highlights. It takes consistency, leadership, and the ability to carry a team—not just carry yourself like you’re the main character in an action movie.

But some quarterbacks never quite got that memo. They talked the talk, soaked up the spotlight, and played the role of a savior only to flame out epically. Here are guys who gave off franchise QB energy—without the franchise QB results.

17. Blake Bortles

Nov 26, 2017; Glendale, AZ, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles (5) looks on prior to the game against the Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Bortles looked the part, talked like the part, and even made it to an AFC Championship. But once the magic wore off, so did the franchise QB label.

16. Matt Leinart

Jan. 18, 2009; Glendale, AZ, USA; Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart against the Philadelphia Eagles during the NFC Championship game at University of Phoenix Stadium. Arizona defeated the Eagles 32-25 to advance to the Super Bowl.

Leinart showed up with Hollywood swagger and Heisman hype. But the NFL spotlight revealed he was more backup than blockbuster.

15. Johnny Manziel

Aug 18, 2014; Landover, MD, USA; Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel (2) takes a snap during warmups prior to the Browns' game against the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field.

He had the confidence, charisma, and commercials—but not the discipline or durability. Johnny Football was all sizzle, no substance.

14. Brock Osweiler

Sep 11, 2016; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler (17) looks for an open receiver during the first quarter against the Chicago Bears at NRG Stadium.

He got paid like a franchise quarterback and carried himself like one, too. But once he got the starting gig, it all unraveled faster than a busted screen pass.

13. Christian Ponder

Sep 3, 2015; Seattle, WA, USA; Oakland Raiders quarterback Christian Ponder (9) throws against the Seattle Seahawks during the fourth quarter at CenturyLink Field.

Drafted to be the future, he sure sounded confident about it. But Minnesota fans quickly realized the future was bleak.

12. DeShone Kizer

Aug 22, 2019; Winnipeg, Manitoba, CAN; Green Bay Packers quarterback DeShone Kizer (9) throws a pass against the Oakland Raiders in the second half at Investors Group Field. The Raiders defeated the Packers 22-21.
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

Kizer walked into Cleveland with a “lead-the-franchise” attitude. One win later, he walked out the door just as fast.

11. Mitch Trubisky

Sep 17, 2017; Tampa, FL, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky (10) warms up before the start of the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium

He had the swagger of a top-two pick. The only problem? He played more like a Day 3 flier.

10. E.J. Manuel

Aug 30, 2018; Seattle, WA, USA; Oakland Raiders quarterback EJ Manuel (3) throws a pass against the Seattle Seahawks during a preseason game at CenturyLink Field.

Big arm, big smile, and a lot of early buzz. But it didn’t take long for Buffalo to realize they’d drafted a placeholder, not a pillar.

9. Zach Wilson

Aug 25, 2024; Denver, Colorado, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson (4) prepares to pass in the second quarter against the Arizona Cardinals at Empower Field at Mile High.
Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images

Wilson strutted in like he was about to own New York. But between the turnovers and shaky pocket presence, the only thing he owned was the bench.

8. Kyle Boller

Oct 23, 2011; Oakland, CA, USA; Oakland Raiders quarterback Kyle Boller (7) during warm ups before the game against the Kansas City Chiefs at O.co Coliseum.

Boller thought he could be Baltimore’s long-term answer. Instead, he was just one in a long line of temporary solutions.

7. Quinn Gray

Dec 23, 2007; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Quinn Gray (5) scrambles during 49-11 victory over the Oakland Raiders at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

Gray had the confidence of a seasoned starter and acted like he belonged. But reality said otherwise—and loudly.

6. Jimmy Clausen

Dec 13, 2015; Baltimore, MD, USA; Baltimore Ravens quarterback Jimmy Clausen (2) looks tho pass during the first quarter against the Seattle Seahawks at M&T Bank Stadium.
Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images

Clausen had that “starter energy” from day one. Unfortunately, the only thing he led was a fast track to a top draft pick the next year.

5. Josh Rosen

Sep 30, 2018; Glendale, AZ, USA; Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen (3) prior to the first start of his NFL career against the Seattle Seahawks at State Farm Stadium.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

He declared himself the most NFL-ready quarterback in his draft class. Turns out, the NFL wasn’t quite ready for him.

4. Jason Campbell

Sept 2, 2011, Seattle, WA, USA; Oakland Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell (8) before the game against the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field.
Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images

Every time you thought he might turn the corner, he drifted back into mediocrity. He played like a guy who wanted to be a franchise QB but couldn’t quite close the deal.

3. Paxton Lynch

Oct 9, 2016; Denver, CO, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Paxton Lynch (12) drops back in the second quarter against the Atlanta Falcons at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

He was tall, confident, and drafted to be Denver’s savior. Instead, he barely lasted long enough to memorize the playbook.

2. Mark Sanchez

1. JaMarcus Russell

Russell oozed confidence and star power before ever taking a snap. But once the games started, it was painfully clear he was playing an entirely different sport.
