Browns’ Quarterback Room Is Crowded Again
This time last year, the Cleveland Browns had a four-man quarterback room. But there was no mystery Deshaun Watson was the unquestioned starter. Fast-forward to this season, and the Browns’ depth chart at quarterback is once again full. But the starting job is wide open.
Veteran Joe Flacco, former first-rounder Kenny Pickett, and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders will all enter training camp with hopes of claiming the No. 1 spot.
While Flacco earned praise for his late-season run in 2023, he’s 40 and clearly not the long-term answer. That leaves the door open for someone to prove themselves. And that’s where Pickett’s pressure begins.

Pickett’s Future May Ride on This Camp
After a shaky stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kenny Pickett was traded to the Browns following a brief 2024 stint as Jalen Hurts’ backup in Philadelphia. He showed flashes throwing for 143 yards and two total touchdowns in a Week 17 start against Dallas, but nothing definitive.
Still, the Browns saw enough to make a move. They gave up just a fifth-round pick and Dorian Thompson-Robinson to bring him in. Now, the 27-year-old Pickett needs to prove he’s more than a depth option.
If he’s outplayed by Flacco or one of the rookies, his days as a potential NFL starter could be numbered. But if he delivers a strong camp and preseason, Pickett could either win the starting job or boost his stock for future opportunities.
Cleveland’s offense needs consistency, especially in the passing game. If Kenny Pickett can’t rise above the rookies or outperform Flacco, he might find himself sliding toward career-backup status.
Training camp will tell the story and for Pickett, it’s a critical chapter.
