LeBron Suggests NFL-Style Award to Fix MVP Debate
For years, NBA fans and analysts have debated the fairness and criteria of the league’s MVP award. Critics often point to the role of subjective narratives over pure performance, an issue even ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne acknowledged by calling herself a “narrative-based voter.”
But now, LeBron James is pushing for change.
In a recent episode of his podcast Mind The Game. The NBA superstar proposed adding an Offensive Player of the Year award, much like the NFL does to ensure that more top-tier performances get recognized.
“I did think about how the NFL does Offensive Player of the Year and MVP,” LeBron said. “I thought that could possibly be something in our league. You give an Offensive Player of the Year and an MVP. It changes things.”
Could a New Award Solve the MVP Problem?
LeBron’s idea has sparked debate. The NBA already awards the scoring title. But his point is that offense isn’t just about putting the ball in the hoop. It includes assists, floor spacing, and overall playmaking, things that don’t always show up in MVP discussions.
However, introducing another subjective award could lead to similar issues. For example, would the Offensive Player of the Year go to whoever generates the most total points, whether through scoring or assists? What if that player misses the playoffs?

These same problems plague MVP voting. Some say it should go to the best player in the league, but what if that player doesn’t elevate his team to playoff contention? Others argue it should go to the best player on the best team.
Still, the NBA has added several new awards recently, including Clutch Player of the Year and the In-Season Tournament MVP. So it’s not far-fetched to imagine the league entertaining LeBron’s proposal.
Whether it would clarify things, or just spark more controversy remains to be seen.
