Rich Paul Blasts Media for Profiting Off LeBron Hate
LeBron James has dominated headlines and conversations for more than 20 years. But now, as whispers of retirement grow louder, his agent Rich Paul has a message for the media.
“Be careful what you wish for.”
Appearing on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Paul didn’t hold back when discussing how James has been treated throughout his historic career.
“When LeBron James retires, they’ll have to find a new boogeyman to hate on just to chase likes and boost ratings,” Paul said.
That shot was clearly aimed at critics like Skip Bayless, who’s made a career out of tearing James down, plus other TV personalities and platforms that have leaned heavily on LeBron-related hot takes.

A Media Love-Hate Relationship
James has arguably been the most polarizing figure in sports since entering the league in 2003. While he’s had no shortage of praise — especially from supporters like Nick Wright and Shannon Sharpe, who often defend his GOAT case — he’s also faced a near-constant barrage of criticism.
From Stephen A. Smith’s recent jabs to years of Skip Bayless barbs, LeBron’s media saga has been a rollercoaster. And while the Lakers superstar rarely engages with his detractors directly, he’s become more vocal in recent years.

Still, Paul’s comments make one thing clear: the “content machine” that is LeBron James won’t be around forever. And his departure will leave a massive hole.
What Happens When the King Steps Down
Even those who’ve made a living criticizing him can’t deny one truth: LeBron James moves the needle. Whether fans love him or hate him, his presence drives ratings, fuels debates, and dominates the sports media ecosystem.
When he finally retires, whether next year or five years from now, the scramble to replace his presence will be intense.
Like him or not, LeBron James has been the story for two decades. And when that story ends, the media might just realize how much they relied on him all along.
