15 MLB Teams That Are Only Loved Inside State Lines

Not every MLB team enjoys a national fanbase. Some are regional royalty—beloved by the locals but largely ignored, dismissed, or even mocked outside their home state.

Whether it’s due to a lack of postseason relevance, small market size, or just plain indifference from the rest of the country, these teams are the definition of “if you know, you know.” Here are 15 MLB franchises that are only truly adored within their state borders.

15. Colorado Rockies

The Rockies are like that local diner everyone swears by—but only if you’re from the neighborhood. Most baseball fans forget they exist outside of Colorado until someone hits a home run into the mountains.

14. Detroit Tigers

In Michigan, the Tigers are a treasured tradition. Outside of it, they’re mostly a reminder of how long it’s been since 1984. Hey, at least they’re good this year!

13. Arizona Diamondbacks

Sep 6, 2024; Houston, Texas, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks center fielder Jake McCarthy (31) and right fielder Corbin Carroll (7) play Houston Astros first baseman Jon Singleton (28) single in the second inning at Minute Maid Park.

Locals in Arizona ride hard for their Snakes. The rest of the country barely remembers that they won a World Series, and they probably couldn’t name more than two players on the roster.

12. Minnesota Twins

Apr 23, 2025; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa (4) turns a double play off a ball hit by Chicago White Sox first base Bobby Dalbec (31) in the sixth inning at Target Field.

Twins fans show up through thick and thin, especially in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. But nationally, they’re treated like baseball wallpaper—there, but not commanding attention.

11. Miami Marlins

In South Florida, there’s a small but proud Marlins following. Outside of it, most people assume the stadium is empty for a reason.

10. Milwaukee Brewers

May 22, 2025; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Brice Turang (2) and first baseman Rhys Hoskins (12) joke with Pittsburgh Pirates designated hitter Andrew McCutchen (22) as play resumes in the sixth inning after a lengthy rain delay at PNC Park.

Wisconsin folks love their Brewers like they love their cheese curds. Outside the state, most people can’t decide if they’re a real threat or just a great name for a beer league team.

9. Cincinnati Reds

Mar 29, 2025; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Cincinnati Reds second baseman Matt McLain (9) high fives shortstop Elly De La Cruz (44) after a play in the eighth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Great American Ball Park

Reds fans live and breathe baseball history. But outside Ohio, that history feels a little dusty, and the present doesn’t help their case.

8. Kansas City Royals

Oct 10, 2024; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Kansas City Royals manager Matt Quatraro (33), outfielder MJ Melendez (1) and shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. (7) watch play from the dugout during the ninth inning against the New York Yankees during game four of the ALDS for the 2024 MLB Playoffs at Kauffman Stadium

In Missouri (and Kansas), the Royals are a point of pride, especially post-2015. Elsewhere, they’re usually slotted into a forgettable Wednesday afternoon game on MLB.TV.

7. Pittsburgh Pirates

May 1, 2025; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes (30) and catcher Henry Davis (32) make their way in from the bullpen to play the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park

Steel City fans cling to nostalgia and the hope of brighter days. But nationally, the Pirates are more known for bargain-bin payrolls than winning baseball.

6. Seattle Mariners

Apr 8, 2025; Seattle, Washington, USA; Seattle Mariners third baseman Dylan Moore (25, left) celebrates with right fielder Luke Raley (20) after turning a double play to end the top of the eleventh inning against the Houston Astros at T-Mobile Park.

In the Pacific Northwest, Mariners fans are passionate and patient. Unfortunately, most other fans forget they exist until a late-night West Coast highlight reel.

5. Cleveland Guardians

Oct 5, 2024; Cleveland, OH, USA; Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase (48) is introduced before playing against the Detroit Tigers in game one of the ALDS for the 2024 MLB Playoffs at Progressive Field.

Cleveland fans are loyal to a fault, but the Guardians don’t move the needle nationally. To most others, they’re a team with a weird new name and not much else.

4. Oakland Athletics

Apr 14, 2024; Oakland, California, USA; Oakland Athletics pitcher Lucas Erceg (70) reacts after making a defensive play for an out against the Washington Nationals during the seventh inning at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

In the Bay Area, A’s fans wear their green and gold like a badge of honor — for now. Everyone else mostly sees a sad stadium and a team about to be relocated.

3. Tampa Bay Rays

May 17, 2024; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Isaac Paredes (17, left) is greeted by second baseman Richie Palacios (1) after starting a double play against the Toronto Blue Jays in the eighth inning at Rogers Centre.

Tampa fans appreciate their scrappy, analytics-driven squad. But they still can’t convince the rest of the country—or even their city—to care.

2. Chicago White Sox

May 17, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Cubs players celebrate team's win against the Chicago White Sox in a baseball game at Wrigley Field

South Side Chicago loves their Sox, but the national spotlight rarely makes it past Wrigley Field. They’re often the “other” team in town than the rest of the country.

Apr 17, 2021; Arlington, Texas, USA; Baltimore Orioles right fielder Anthony Santander (25) and relief pitcher Shawn Armstrong (43) celebrate their teams win against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field. The Orioles won 6-1.

Charm City is buzzing again with Orioles pride. But outside Maryland, most fans now remember they’re not supposed to be bad anymore.
