20 Most Egotistical NHL Stars of All Time

Hockey players are usually known for being humble, team-first guys who answer every question with a cliché and a nod to the locker room. But not everyone in the NHL sticks to that playbook.

Some players walk into the rink like it’s a runway and act like the game revolves around them. Whether it was flashy behavior, non-stop self-promotion, or an extra dose of attitude, these guys made sure the spotlight was never far away.

20. Jeremy Roenick

Roenick never shied away from a camera or a mic, always ready with a hot take or a jab. He was as confident off the ice as he was on it, and sometimes even more so.

19. Evander Kane

Between the money phone pics and social media callouts, Kane always made it clear that subtlety wasn’t his style. Confidence? Sure. Humility? Not exactly his strong suit.

18. Sean Avery

Nov 09, 2011; Ottawa, ON, CAN; New York Rangers left wing Sean Avery (16) during the second period of play against the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place. The Rangers defeated the Senators 3-2.

Avery didn’t just want to beat you; he tried to chirp you into oblivion while doing it. He made himself the main character in a sport that usually avoids them.

17. Ilya Bryzgalov

Jan 7, 2015; Anaheim, CA, USA; Anaheim Ducks goalie Ilya Bryzgalov (80) blocks a shot against the New York Rangers during the first period at Honda Center.
Kelvin Kuo-Imagn Images

He once called himself “humongous big” and talked more about the universe than goaltending. Bryzgalov’s interviews often felt like TED Talks, but if TED Talks had a goalie with a colossal ego,

16. Alexei Yashin

15. P.K. Subban

14. Theo Fleury

13. Patrick Kane

Apr 4, 2025; Detroit, Michigan, USA; Detroit Red Wings right wing Patrick Kane (88) shoots and scores a goal during the second period against the Carolina Hurricanes at Little Caesars Arena.

Kane’s talent has never been questioned, but neither has his belief that he’s the best on the ice. That swagger showed up in his hands, his hand is attitude, and sometimes in ways that rubbed people the wrong way.

12. Ron Duguay

The flow, the fame, and the fashion—Duguay turned NHL games into his party. He was a star who knew it and ensured the world did too.

11. Artemi Panarin

Apr 17, 2025; New York, New York, USA; New York Rangers left wing Artemi Panarin (10) attempts a shot on goal in the third period against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Madison Square Garden.

10. Phil Kessel

Apr 6, 2023; Las Vegas, Nevada, USA; Vegas Golden Knights right wing Phil Kessel (8) skates against the Los Angeles Kings during the third period at T-Mobile Arena.

Kessel’s ego came out in quieter ways, like when he told the media exactly how little he cared about what they thought. Under the radar or not, the self-assured vibes were always there.

9. Alex Ovechkin

May 12, 2025; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin (8) scores a goal on his shot against the Carolina Hurricanes during the third period in game four of the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Lenovo Center.

Pronger played like he was in charge of every shift and acted like it. Intimidation was part of his game, and he knew how good he was.

7. Brett Hull

Jan 28, 2003; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; FILE PHOTO; Detroit Red Wings right wing Brett Hull (17) in action against the New Jersey Devils at Continental Airlines Arena.

5. Brad Marchand

Feb 28, 2023; Calgary, Alberta, CAN; Boston Bruins left wing Brad Marchand (63) reacts during the second period against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Marchand loves being hated almost as much as he loves scoring. He leans into the villain role with a confidence that’s nearly admirable.

4. Carey Price

Apr 23, 2022; Ottawa, Ontario, CAN; Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price (31) is unable to stop a shot from Ottawa Senators center Josh Norris (not pictured) in the second period at the Canadian Tire Centre.
Marc DesRosiers-Imagn Images

He carried himself like a rockstar in a goalie’s mask, and his calm swagger said more than words ever could. There was always a “don’t you know who I am?” vibe to him, even when he barely spoke.

3. Jeremy Swayman

Apr 10, 2025; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman (1) steers the puck towards the boards during the second period against the Chicago Blackhawks at TD Garden.
