Ranking the 30 Most Forgotten Stars in NBA History

The NBA loves to celebrate its icons—Jordan, LeBron, Kobe, and Magic. But for every household name, a star once lit up the court and barely gets a mention in even the nerdiest basketball conversations.

This list is for those guys. The players who put up numbers, won games, made All-Star teams, or carried a franchise only faded into the background as time marched on. Let’s give them their flowers—before we forget again.

30. Brad Daugherty

A five-time All-Star who anchored Cleveland in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Daugherty was a double-double machine. Nowadays, he’s more known for NASCAR than his impressive NBA career.

29. Michael Redd

When healthy, Redd could flat-out score and even made an All-NBA team in 2004. However, injuries and Milwaukee’s lack of relevance kept him from long-term fame.

With a name like that, how is he forgotten? The man could shoot from anywhere and scored nearly 30 a game one season.

27. Kiki Vandeweghe

Smooth scorer with a textbook jumper who put up 20+ points per game for a decade. For some reason, people remember the name but not the game.

26. Terry Cummings

He averaged 20 and 8 for much of his prime and won Rookie of the Year, yet he’s rarely brought up in any all-time debates. Quiet consistency will do that to you.

25. Ron Harper

Before becoming a role player on those Bulls and Lakers title teams, Harper was a legit star with the Cavs and Clippers. Injuries robbed him of what could’ve been an elite career.

24. Roy Tarpley

Tarpley had all the talent in the world—rebounding, scoring, defense—but personal struggles kept him from sustained greatness. Still, his peak was impossible to ignore.

23. Derek Anderson

A silky scorer who played for a handful of playoff teams, Anderson always felt like he was on the verge of something bigger. Injuries and timing just never let it happen.

22. Glenn Robinson

The “Big Dog” could fill it up, especially in Milwaukee. He put up 20 a game for nearly a decade but never got the spotlight his game deserved.

21. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf

He was one of the smoothest shooters of his era and an early prototype for Steph Curry. However, his stance during the national anthem overshadowed a quietly excellent career.

20. Tom Chambers

He once scored 60 points in a game and made four All-Star teams. The guy could jump out of the gym, yet no one talks about him unless you bring up that one poster dunk.

19. Fat Lever

Ridiculously underrated stat sheet stuffer who averaged near triple-doubles before it was trendy. His name alone should’ve made him more memorable.

18. Cedric Maxwell

He won the Finals MVP and is still not mentioned among the Celtics’ greats. Cornbread was clutch, but history hasn’t been kind.

17. Antonio McDyess

Explosive early in his career and a solid vet late, McDyess was once seen as a future superstar. Injuries changed the trajectory, but he still had a quietly impactful career.

16. Andrei Kirilenko

Mr. Versatility, before positionless basketball was cool. AK-47 did everything—and yet, somehow, we barely remember it.

15. Steve Francis

He was once “The Franchise” and an electrifying guard who could take over a game. His fall from stardom was as quick as his first step.

14. Detlef Schrempf

A two-time Sixth Man of the Year and three-time All-Star, Detlef was a key piece on multiple contenders. Sadly, he’s more known for his “Parks and Rec” cameo than his game.

13. Reggie Theus

8. Danny Granger

At his peak, Roy was seen as the next great shooting guard and a future Hall of Famer. Injuries ruined the story, but that prime was unforgettable if you remember it.

6. Gus Williams

A key cog on the championship Sonics and an All-Star in his own right. His name has unfortunately been buried under Seattle’s basketball grave.

5. Xavier McDaniel
