Ranking the 19 Most Reckless Quarterbacks the NFL Has Ever Seen

Some quarterbacks live for structure, discipline, and clean pockets. And then there are the ones who see chaos as an opportunity, not a threat—the gunslingers, the risk-takers, the human roller coasters.

This list is all about the most reckless quarterbacks the NFL has ever seen. Whether they were throwing into triple coverage, diving headfirst into a linebacker, or trying to make a miracle happen on every play, these guys were allergic to playing it safe.

19. Blake Bortles

Oct 15, 2017; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles (5) runs the ball during the second half of a football game against the Los Angeles Rams at EverBank Field.

Bortles was the king of YOLO throws and fourth-quarter stat padding. He’d make a jaw-dropping play one moment and a baffling decision the next.

18. Vince Young

October 18, 2010; Jacksonville FL, USA; Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young (10) during the first quarter against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Field. The Titans won 30-3.
Kim Klement-Imagn Images

Young trusted his legs a little too much and his reads a little too little. His highlight reel is wild—but so is the turnover count.

17. Carson Wentz

Aug 22, 2019; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz (11) looks on against the Baltimore Ravens at Lincoln Financial Field.
Bill Streicher-Imagn Images

16. Jameis Winston

Dec 31, 2017; Tampa, FL, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston (3) points against the New Orleans Saints during the first quarter at Raymond James Stadium.
Kim Klement-Imagn Images

Winston could throw for 5,000 yards and 30 interceptions in the same season—because he literally did. His decision-making was always one giant gamble.

15. Johnny Manziel

Jul 30, 2015; Berea, OH, USA; Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel (2) throws a pass during training camp at the Cleveland Browns practice facility.

14. Jay Cutler

Dec 4, 2014; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler (6) throws a pass during the first quarter against the Dallas Cowboys at Soldier Field.

13. Drew Lock

Dec 27, 2020; Inglewood, California, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock (3) looks to pass during the first half against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

12. Tony Romo

Nov 27, 2014; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9) waves to the fans before the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at AT&T Stadium.

6. Jake Plummer
