In a dramatic midseason move, the Washington Nationals fired longtime manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo on Sunday. The decision came just hours after the club suffered a home sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox. Dropping their record to 37-53, dead last in the NL East.
The timing of the decision stunned many around the league, especially with the MLB Draft just a week away and Washington holding the No. 1 overall pick. Team owner Mark Lerner emphasized the need for a “fresh approach and new energy” as the franchise looks to end a downward spiral that’s lasted six seasons since its 2019 World Series triumph.
Senior VP Mike DeBartolo will take over GM duties on an interim basis, but no replacement has been named yet for Martinez.
From MLB Champions to Cellar Dwellers
Rizzo had been with the organization for over 15 years, playing a key role in constructing the roster that won the 2019 World Series. Martinez, hired by Rizzo in 2018, led the club to glory after a memorable turnaround from a 19-31 start that season. But since then, the Nationals have languished in the bottom of the division every year.
Lerner acknowledged the pair’s past achievements but pointed to the lack of recent progress:
“While we are appreciative of their past successes, the on-field performance has not been where we or our fans expect it to be.”
Despite flashes of promise from young talents like MacKenzie Gore, James Wood, and CJ Abrams. Washington has struggled to climb back into contention.

Martinez Defends Staff, Leaves With Legacy
Martinez, who finishes with a 500-622 record, had vocally defended his coaching staff last month, stating:
“It’s never on coaching… The message is clear. The work is done. It’s always about the players.”
His leadership style and ability to connect with players and fans alike won him admiration from Lerner and many within the sport.
As Washington begins its search for a new direction, fans can only hope the shake-up leads to a long-overdue turnaround. And a new era of Nationals baseball.
