NFL Fans Turn on Tony Romo Over Controversial Trump Connection
The NFL season hasn’t even started, but former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is already at the center of controversy.
Now a lead broadcaster for CBS, Romo earned praise in his early analyst days for predicting plays before they happened. His charm and football IQ quickly made him a fan favorite. But as Week 1 approaches, that goodwill may be eroding fast.
NFL fans took to social media this week to criticize Romo after it was announced that he joined the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. This was recently reestablished by Donald Trump as part of the revival of the Presidential Fitness Test.
The initiative aims to encourage physical education in schools and bring “tradition” back to college athletics. The government noted the council will also support efforts like “reforming the broken transfer portal” and “keeping men out of women’s sports.”

While Romo isn’t the only NFL name on the council, —Saquon Barkley, Nick Bosa, Tua Tagovailoa, and Lawrence Taylor are also involved — his presence in the Trump-connected program drew sharp reactions.
“I see Tony Romo is a Trump supporter so I’ll never watch a broadcast he is a part of ever again,” one fan posted on X.
“Tony’s finally got a job he will be good at. Just kidding,” another sarcastically added.
“This is embarrassing,” a third wrote bluntly.

Although some fans defended Romo’s right to support any administration, the hashtag chatter of a so-called “Romo Boycott” is gaining momentum. Whether it leads to any ratings impact remains to be seen.
For now, the backlash has ignited a fresh wave of political debate in the NFL broadcast booth. And this is before a single snap has even been played.
