20 NFL Players Who Got Hyped Way Too Soon

Every NFL season, there’s a fresh wave of players labeled the next big thing before they’ve even proven themselves on the field. Some live up to the buzz, but others get an avalanche of hype that crashes before it ever has a chance to build something real.

This list is for the guys who got crowned too early—whether it was because of one flashy preseason, a high draft slot, or a viral highlight reel. These 20 players were billed as future stars way too soon, and reality hit a little harder than expected.

20. Dorial Green-Beckham

Sep 13, 2015; Tampa, FL, USA; Tennessee Titans wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham (17) runs with the ball as Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Chris Conte (23) attempts to defend during the second half at Raymond James Stadium. Tennessee Titans defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 42-14.
Kim Klement-Imagn Images

With a build that screamed superstar, Green-Beckham was supposed to dominate secondaries. Instead, inconsistency and off-field issues derailed the hype train almost immediately.

19. DeShone Kizer

Aug 8, 2019; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback DeShone Kizer (9) looks to pass in the first quarter during the game against the Houston Texans at Lambeau Field.
Benny Sieu-Imagn Images

The Browns handed Kizer the keys as a rookie and expected miracles. What they got was a turnover-prone mess that showed he was nowhere near ready for the spotlight.

18. Bishop Sankey

Aug 10, 2017; Orchard Park, NY, USA; Minnesota Vikings running back Bishop Sankey (43) during the game against the Buffalo Bills at New Era Field.
Kevin Hoffman-Imagn Images

The first running back taken in the 2014 draft, Sankey was hyped as Tennessee’s future bell cow. He fizzled out quickly and barely made a dent in the league.

17. Kevin White

May 25, 2016; Lake Forest, IL, USA; Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White (13) during the OTA practice at Halas Hall.
Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

White’s draft stock soared thanks to his speed and size combo, but constant injuries kept him in street clothes more than on the field. He was all potential and no production.

16. Matt Leinart

Aug 15, 2011; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans quarterback Matt Leinart (11) calls signals at the line against the New York Jets in the second quarter at Reliant Stadium
Brett Davis-Imagn Images

Leinart came into the NFL with a Heisman Trophy, national titles, and a boatload of expectations. His arm and motivation never really clicked at the pro level.

15. Tavon Austin

Dec 15, 2019; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys receiver Tavon Austin (10) runs after a reception for a touchdown in the second quarter against the Los Angeles Rams at AT&T Stadium.

He was supposed to be a human joystick at the next level, but Austin never found a consistent role. Flashy plays couldn’t make up for a lack of impact.

14. Trent Richardson

September 22, 2013; San Francisco, CA, USA; Indianapolis Colts running back Trent Richardson (34) runs past quarterback Matt Hasselbeck (8) before the game against the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park. The Colts defeated the 49ers 27-7.

The Browns thought they were getting a game-changer with the third overall pick. Instead, Richardson’s vision and decision-making proved to be massive red flags.

13. Blake Bortles

Nov 19, 2015; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles (5) throws a pass against the Tennessee Titans during an NFL football game at EverBank Field.
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

After one good season and a few garbage-time stats, Bortles was prematurely anointed the Jaguars’ long-term answer. The reality? He was always more meme than mainstay.

12. Josh Doctson

Dec 3, 2018; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Washington Redskins wide receiver Josh Doctson (18) is unable to catch a pass in the end zone during the second quarter against the Washington Redskins at Lincoln Financial Field.

Washington fans were told Doctson was the next big thing at receiver. The problem? He could never stay healthy or separate from defenders.

11. Paxton Lynch

Sep 1, 2016; Glendale, AZ, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Paxton Lynch (12) against the Arizona Cardinals during a preseason game at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Big arm, big frame, and zero ability to read an NFL defense. Lynch’s hype train derailed almost as quickly as it left the station.

10. Jake Locker

Nov 3, 2013; St. Louis, MO, USA; Tennessee Titans quarterback Jake Locker (10) attempts a pass as St. Louis Rams defensive end William Hayes (95) pressures during the second half at the Edward Jones Dome. The Titans defeated the Rams 28-21.
Scott Rovak-Imagn Images

Locker had all the tools and was seen as a franchise quarterback in the making. But accuracy and durability issues made his NFL career painfully short.

9. Kellen Winslow II

October 16, 2011; Tampa, FL, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Kellen Winslow (82) during the first quarter against the New Orleans Saints at Raymond James Stadium.
Kim Klement-Imagn Images

He declared himself a “soldier,” but his NFL journey never matched the early hype. Injuries and controversies ended up defining his career more than production.

8. Sammy Watkins

Feb 2, 2020; Miami Gardens, Florida, USA; Kansas City Chiefs receiver Sammy Watkins (14) runs after a reception against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium.
Matthew Emmons-Imagn Images

Watkins had elite college tape and went fourth overall, but never became the dominant WR1 that teams expected. Injuries and inconsistency followed him everywhere.

7. Johnny Manziel

Oct 18, 2015; Cleveland, OH, USA; Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel warms up before the game against the Denver Broncos at FirstEnergy Stadium.
James Lang-Imagn Images

Johnny Football took college football by storm and rode that wave straight into the NFL. But his game—and his focus—never translated to the pros.

5. Ryan Leaf

4. Jalen Reagor

Dec 13, 2020; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jalen Reagor (18) makes a reception past New Orleans Saints outside linebacker Demario Davis (56) during the fourth quarter at Lincoln Financial Field.
