16 NFL Players Who Talked Big and Played Small

When it comes to the NFL, confidence is part of the job description. But some players cross the line from swagger into straight-up delusion—and then fail to back it up on the field.

These are the guys who called their shots, hyped themselves up, and then didn’t exactly deliver. Whether it was empty trash talk, self-given nicknames, or declarations of greatness, these 16 players were all bark and no bite.

16. Vince Young

He once dubbed the Eagles the “Dream Team” before the season even started. Spoiler alert: that dream quickly turned into a nightmare.

15. Rex Grossman

He talked like he was Brady, but played more like a backup’s backup. “Sexy Rexy” had confidence for days, and the stat line of a guy you forgot was still in the league.

14. Freddie Mitchell

Philadelphia Eagles receiver Freddie Mitchell snares a pass for first down when it was fourth and 26 while being covered by Green Bay Packers Bhawoh Jue (21) and Darren Sharper late in the fourth quarter of their game Sunday, January 11, 2004 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Known more for thanking his hands than making plays with them, Mitchell hyped himself into punchline territory. His career peaked with one big catch and a whole lot of interviews.

13. Johnny Manziel

Johnny Football was electric in college and obnoxiously self-assured in the pros. Too bad he flamed out before the ink dried on his rookie contract.

12. Matt Leinart

Dec 23, 2012; Charlotte, NC, USA; Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt Leinart (7) drops back to pass during the third quarter against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium. Panthers defeated the Raiders 17-6.

Leinart came into the NFL with Hollywood hair and Heisman hype. But after a few mediocre starts and even more parties, he was relegated to clipboard duty.

11. Jalen Reagor

Nov 3, 2024; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Jalen Reagor (89) celebrates against the Cleveland Browns during the fourth quarter at Huntington Bank Field.

He chirped about proving doubters wrong after being drafted over Justin Jefferson. That aged poorly—very poorly.

10. Cortland Finnegan

Feb 7, 2016; Santa Clara, CA, USA; Carolina Panthers cornerback Cortland Finnegan (26) against the Denver Broncos during Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium.

Finnegan talked smack like he was a shutdown corner, but his coverage skills didn’t always match his mouth. He got beaten often and then beaten up by Andre Johnson.

9. Blake Bortles

Nov 25, 2018; Orchard Park, NY, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles (5) throws a pass during the first half against the Buffalo Bills at New Era Field.

Bortles had occasional flashes but always seemed far more confident than his game deserved. He talked big in interviews but rarely delivered anything beyond mediocrity.

8. Mike Williams (USC)

Dec 17, 2020; Paradise, Nevada, USA; Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams (81) against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.

He sued the NFL to enter the draft early, then talked himself up as the next big thing. It turns out, his NFL stint was a whole lot of nothing.

7. Jimmy Clausen

Dec 20, 2015; Baltimore, MD, USA; Baltimore Ravens quarterback Jimmy Clausen (2) warms up prior to the game against the Kansas City Chiefs at M&T Bank Stadium.

Clausen said teams would regret passing on him. The only regret was from the team that didn’t.

6. Kellen Winslow Jr.

October 16, 2011; Tampa, FL, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Kellen Winslow (82) during the first quarter against the New Orleans Saints at Raymond James Stadium.
Kim Klement-Imagn Images

He once screamed “I’m a soldier!” in an infamous post-game rant. Then he spent most of his career getting injured, suspended, or benched.

5. Kevin Kolb

Jul 28, 2013; Pittsford, NY, USA; Buffalo Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb (4) during training camp at St. John Fisher College.

The Eagles handed him the keys like he was the next Montana. But Kolb never even looked like the next Ty Detmer.

4. DeShone Kizer

Aug 15, 2019; Baltimore, MD, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback DeShone Kizer (9) throws before the game against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

Kizer once said he could be the greatest quarterback ever. Then he played like a guy who couldn’t even hold a backup job.

3. Tony Mandarich

He called himself the “best offensive line prospect ever.” That was before he got manhandled in the NFL and flamed out as one of the league’s biggest busts.

2. JaMarcus Russell

Dec 16, 2007; Oakland, CA, USA; Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell (2) drops back to pass during the 21-14 loss to the Indianapolis Colts at McAfee Coliseum.
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

Russell had a cannon arm, sky-high confidence, and no work ethic to back it up. His tape reviews became legendary for all the wrong reasons.

1. Eli Apple

Sep 12, 2015; Columbus, OH, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes cornerback Eli Apple (13) congratulates cornerback Gareon Conley (8) after his interception against the Hawaii Warriors at Ohio Stadium. Ohio State won the game 38-0.

Apple never missed a chance to talk trash, especially in the playoffs. But his play consistently failed to match his mouth—and fans around the league took notice.
