19 NFL Stars Who Got Exposed When They Switched Teams

Switching teams in the NFL can be a fresh start—or a total disaster. Some players think they’re just one change of scenery away from greatness, only to find out the magic might’ve been left behind with their old jersey.

This list is all about those NFL stars who hit the market, inked a new deal, and then yikes. Whether it was a scheme mismatch or age catching up, these guys got exposed when they left their original teams.

19. Javon Walker

September 11, 2005; Detroit, MI, USA; Green Bay Packers wide receiver #84 Javon Walker makes a big gain on a pass from Brett Favre(not pictured) in the 3rd quarter against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The Packers were penalized for offensive pass interference and the play was called back.

Walker was a beast in Green Bay, then went to Denver and had one solid year before it all unraveled. Injuries and inconsistency took over fast.

18. Joe Horn

Dec. 4, 2005: Baton Rouge, LA, USA; New Orleans Saints receiver Joe Horn (87) works for more yards after making a catch during the first half against the Tampa Bay Bucanneers at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA
Matt Stamey-US Presswire

Horn was a touchdown machine in New Orleans but became almost invisible when he signed with Atlanta. The swagger stayed, but the production didn’t follow.

17. Gibril Wilson

Dec. 14, 2008; Oakland, CA, USA; Oakland Raiders safety Gibril Wilson (28) runs back in interception past New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker (83) in the second quarter at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland, CA. The Patriots defeated the Raiders 49-21

Wilson was a key part of the Giants’ Super Bowl run, then got a massive deal with the Raiders and disappeared into the abyss. The big plays vanished, and so did the spotlight.

16. Roy Williams (WR)

August 7, 2008; Detroit, MI, USA; Detroit Lions wide receiver Roy Williams (11) catches a first quarter touchdown pass against the New York Giants
Leon Halip-Imagn Images

Williams had a good thing going in Detroit, but looked completely out of sync once he joined the Cowboys. Dallas gave up way too much for a guy who couldn’t deliver.

15. Brock Osweiler

Dec 24, 2017; Landover, MD, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler (17) passes the ball in front of Washington Redskins linebacker Pete Robertson (45) in the first quarter at FedEx Field
Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

He cashed in on a few good games with Denver, then went to Houston and instantly became a punchline. The Texans paid like he was the guy, but he played like anything but.

14. Le’Veon Bell

Dec 12, 2019; Baltimore, MD, USA; New York Jets running back Le'Veon Bell (26) rushes as Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith (22) defends during the second quarter at M&T Bank Stadium
Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images

Bell sat out a year to preserve his value, then joined the Jets and couldn’t get anything going. The explosive back from Pittsburgh was nowhere to be found.

13. Albert Haynesworth

October 7, 2007; Nashville, TN, USA; Atlanta Falcons quarterback (13) Joey Harrington gets hit by Tennessee Titans defensive tackle (92) Albert Haynesworth and linebacker (53) Keith Bulluck after releasing the ball in the first half at LP Field.
Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

Haynesworth was a dominant force with the Titans but completely flopped in Washington. His massive contract became one of the worst in league history.

12. Nnamdi Asomugha

October 18, 2009; Oakland, CA, USA; Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (21) watches warm ups before the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The Raiders defeated the Eagles 13-9.

Nnamdi was a lockdown corner in Oakland, but in Philly’s “Dream Team,” he was just another guy. Opposing QBs didn’t fear him anymore, and it showed.

11. Greg Jennings

Dec 30, 2012; Minneapolis, MN, USA; Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings (85) against the Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome. The Vikings defeated the Packers 37-34
Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

Jennings was a steady weapon in Green Bay but quickly faded after joining the Vikings. Without Aaron Rodgers, the production dipped hard.

10. Carson Palmer (Raiders version)

Dec 5, 2010; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer (9) calls a signal at the line during the first half against the New Orleans Saints at Paul Brown Stadium.

Palmer had a solid career in Cincinnati but looked lost when he went to Oakland. It wasn’t until he got to Arizona that he finally bounced back.

9. Jevon Kearse

Dec 14, 2008; Houston, TX, USA; Tennessee Titans defensive end Jevon Kearse (90) against the Houston Texans in the fourth quarter at Reliant Stadium. The Texans defeated the Titans 13-12
Brett Davis-Imagn Images

Kearse earned the nickname “The Freak” in Tennessee but didn’t live up to the hype with the Eagles. Injuries and age dulled his explosiveness.

8. Edgerrin James

Jan 10, 2009; Charlotte, NC, USA; Arizona Cardinals running back Edgerrin James (32) scores a touchdown in the first quarter as Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Damione Lewis (92) defends at Bank of America Stadium
Bob Donnan-Imagn Images

James thrived with Peyton in Indy, but his elite days were clearly behind him when he moved to Arizona. He put up numbers, but the burst just wasn’t there anymore.

7. Brandon Marshall (Seahawks/Giants version)

Oct 1, 2017; Tampa, FL, USA; New York Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall (15) dives forward in the second half against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.
Jonathan Dyer-Imagn Images

Marshall had a productive career on multiple teams, but his late stops in Seattle and New York were brutal. The dominance was gone, and so was the separation.

6. Chad Johnson

Sept 7, 2008; Baltimore, MD, USA; Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson (85) before the game against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. Chad Johnson legally changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco this week but the NFL informed the Bengals that there are issues needed to be resolved before he can wear his new name on his jersey.
James Lang-Imagn Images

Johnson was electric in Cincinnati but never fit in with the Patriots. One season, barely any catches, and a very quiet exit.

5. Eric Decker

Feb 2, 2014; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker (87) against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Decker looked like a legit WR1 in Denver, but life without Peyton in New York was a reality check. The touchdowns dried up fast.

4. DeMarco Murray

Jan 4, 2015; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (29) celebrates with receiver Dez Bryant (88) after scoring a touchdown against the Detroit Lions during the third quarter in the NFC Wild Card Playoff Game at AT&T Stadium
Matthew Emmons-Imagn Images

After leading the league in rushing with the Cowboys, Murray bolted to Philly and instantly looked like a square peg in a Chip Kelly-sized hole. He never quite recaptured that star power again.

3. Josh Norman

Feb 7, 2016; Santa Clara, CA, USA; Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman (24) breaks up a pass intended for Denver Broncos wide receiver Jordan Norwood (11) during the second quarter in Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium
Kyle Terada-Imagn Images

Norman was elite in Carolina and rode that wave to a huge deal in Washington. The shutdown skills didn’t make the trip.

2. Nick Foles

Dec 26, 2021; Seattle, Washington, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Nick Foles (9) pwasses during pregame warmups against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field

Foles was a hero in Philly but flamed out quickly with both the Jaguars and Bears. Outside of that Eagles magic, things just never clicked.

Moss in Minnesota was legendary, and in New England he thrived again—but that short stint in Oakland? Let’s pretend it didn’t happen.
