Kirk Herbstreit, McAfee Slammed for ESPN GameDay Claims
Kirk Herbstreit recently sparked backlash after claiming Pat McAfee “saved” ESPN’s College GameDay. On the Next Man Up podcast, Herbstreit said McAfee offered to cover show expenses when ESPN was planning budget cuts. McAfee’s move reportedly impressed upper management so much that they reversed the decision.
Herbstreit’s retelling painted McAfee as the show’s unsung hero… someone who stepped up to protect the crew and production quality when corporate purse strings tightened.

David Samson Rips Story as Corporate Myth
But not everyone’s buying the feel-good tale. Former MLB executive David Samson blasted the narrative on his podcast, Nothing Personal with David Samson. According to him, major companies like Disney don’t operate on emotion.
“When companies downsize, it’s strategic,” Samson said. “They don’t reverse cost-cutting decisions because of one celebrity’s goodwill. If you think that changes Disney’s corporate philosophy, you’re high, and not on drugs, just high on fantasy.”
Samson didn’t hold back, calling out both Herbstreit and McAfee for oversimplifying the business side of ESPN’s decisions.
Despite the controversy, College GameDay is gearing up for its 38th season. With Nick Saban joining the crew and Lee Corso set to retire after the Texas vs. Ohio State opener, all eyes will be on how the show evolves, drama or not.
