Ranking the 20 Pettiest Quarterbacks of All Time

There’s confidence, and then there’s pettiness, and some quarterbacks live squarely in that second category. Whether they were holding grudges, firing off cryptic quotes, or making everything very personal, these guys made the NFL feel like a high-stakes soap opera.

Sometimes it was funny, sometimes it was over the top, and sometimes it made you wonder if they were playing football or starring in a reality show. Either way, the drama was always guaranteed.

20. Donovan McNabb

He never really let go of the whole T.O. saga, even years after it ended. If you bring it up today, he’ll still have a few things to say.

19. Jim McMahon

Jan 26, 1986; New Orleans, LA, USA; FILE PHOTO; Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon (9) during Super Bowl XX against the New England Patriots at the Superdome. The Bears defeated the Patriots 46-10.
Malcolm Emmons-Imagn Images

McMahon thrived on being a heel, especially if it meant annoying his own coach. He once wore a headband just to spite the NFL, and then wrote on it.

18. Jay Cutler

Sep 16, 2007; Denver, CO, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler (6) during 23-20 overtime victory over Oakland Raiders at Invesco Field at Mile High.
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

Cutler’s resting scowl always looked like he had beef with someone, even if it was just his toaster. He was equal parts arm talent and unapologetic eye-roll.

17. Carson Palmer

Nov 20, 2011; Minneapolis, MN, USA; Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer (3) looks to pass against the Minnesota Vikings in the first quarter at the Metrodome. The Raiders win 27-21.
Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images

When things didn’t go his way in Cincinnati, he basically ghosted the whole franchise. It was the quarterback version of blocking someone’s number and never looking back.

16. Cam Newton

December 4, 2011; Tampa, FL, USA; Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1) runs with the ball during the second half against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. Carolina won 38-19.
Kim Klement-Imagn Images

Cam never forgot a slight, whether it came from a defender, a reporter, or a fashion critic. He could turn a postgame podium into a personal vendetta.

15. Jeff George

Nov 30, 1997; Oakland, CA, USA; FILE PHOTO; Oakland Raiders quarterback Jeff George (3) in action against the Miami Dolphins at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
Peter Brouillet-Imagn Images

Jeff George acted like every incompletion was someone else’s fault. Coaches, receivers, and equipment managers, no one was safe from his passive-aggressive blame game.

14. Philip Rivers

Sep 14, 2009; Oakland, CA, USA; San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers (17) throws a pass in the third quarter against the Oakland Raiders at Oakland Alameda Coliseum. The Chargers defeated the Raiders 24-20.
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

He never cursed, but he talked more trash than anyone in the league. Rivers would remember a missed call from three seasons ago and bring it up mid-drive.

13. Boomer Esiason

Dec 20, 1987; Cincinnati, OH, USA; FILE PHOTO; Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason (7) in action against New Orleans Saints linebacker Rickey Jackson (57) at Riverfront Stadium.
Malcolm Emmons-Imagn Images

Boomer could hold a grudge like it was a trophy. If you crossed him once, you were probably on his mental bulletin board for life.

12. Jim Harbaugh

Sep 26, 1993; Chicago, IL, USA; FILE PHOTO; Chicago Bears quarterback Jim Harbaugh (4) in action against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Soldier Field.
Peter Brouillet-Imagn Images

Before he was the most intense coach alive, he was the most intense quarterback alive. And he always seemed about one incompletion away from a full-on tantrum.

11. Steve Young

Jan 28, 1990; New Orleans, LA, USA; FILE PHOTO; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young warms up against the Denver Broncos during Super Bowl XXIV at the Superdome. The 49ers defeated the Broncos 55-10.
Manny Rubio-Imagn Images

Young didn’t exactly hide his frustration about playing in Joe Montana’s shadow. Every time he got a chance to take the spotlight, he made sure you knew it.

10. Deshaun Watson

Apr 9, 2016; Clemson, SC, USA; Clemson Tigers Clemson Tigers quarterback Deshaun Watson (4) looks to pass the ball during the first quarter of the spring game at Clemson Memorial Stadium.
Joshua S. Kelly-Imagn Images

Whether it’s beef with management or cryptic Instagram posts, Watson has leaned into the drama. He may not say much directly, but the subtweets do plenty of talking.

9. Matt Hasselbeck

Feb 5, 2006; Detroit, MI, USA; Seattle Seahawks quarterback (8) Matt Hasselbeck warms up before the Super Bowl XL against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Ford Field.
Matthew Emmons-Imagn Images

“We want the ball and we’re gonna score” will live in petty infamy. The fact that it immediately backfired only added to the lore.

8. Ben Roethlisberger

Nov 16, 2008; Pittsburgh, PA, USA; Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (7) passes against the San Diego Chargers during the second quarter of a football game at Heinz Field. The Steelers won 11-10.
Don Wright-Imagn Images

Big Ben had a habit of stirring things up with subtle digs and locker room leaks. Somehow, drama always seemed to find him, or maybe the other way around.

7. Brett Favre

December 21, 2006; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback (4) Brett Favre throws a pass during the first quarter against the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field.
Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images

Favre treated retirement like a weapon. Every offseason turned into a soap opera, and somehow, it was always someone else’s fault.

6. Jay Schroeder

Sep 14, 1986; Washington, DC, USA; FILE PHOTO; Washington Redskins quarterback Jay Schroeder (10) in action against the Los Angeles Raiders at RFK Stadium.
Manny Rubio-Imagn Images

Schroeder wasn’t just petty, he was icy. Teammates often said he cared more about being right than being liked.

5. Joe Namath

Jan 12, 1969; Miami, FL, USA; FILE PHOTO; New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath (12) in action against the Baltimore Colts during Super Bowl III at the Orange Bowl. The Jets defeated the Colts 16-7.
Darryl Norenberg-Imagn Images

Namath could be charming, but he never forgot a slight. And if you questioned him, you were guaranteed a headline-worthy quote the next day.

4. Michael Vick

Dec 05, 2004; Tampa, FL, USA; Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick in action at Raymond James Stadium.
Preston Mack-Imagn Images

When he got benched or called out, Vick could go radio silent or drop a vague jab. He let his legs do the talking on the field, but off it, he played the long game.

3. Eli Manning

Feb 3, 2008; Glendale, AZ, USA; New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (10) holds a game-ball after defeating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII at the University of Phoenix Stadium. The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots 17-14.
Matthew Emmons-Imagn Images

Don’t let the aw-shucks face fool you, Eli refused to play for the Chargers before ever taking a snap. It was a Hall of Fame level power move disguised as humility.

2. Aaron Rodgers

Oct 20, 2024; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) warms up before the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium.
Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

Rodgers could hold a grudge longer than most people keep houseplants alive. Whether it was an old coach, a front office, or his own family, he was always ready to make it personal.

1. Tom Brady

Oct 12, 2014; Orchard Park, NY, USA; New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (12) looks to throw a pass against the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium. New England beats Buffalo 37 to 22.
Timothy T. Ludwig-Imagn Images

From obsessing over draft day slights to dropping veiled shots at coaches and teammates, Brady turned pettiness into a motivational art form. If you gave him the tiniest reason, he’d make you regret it, seven rings later.
