15 NFL Quarterbacks Who Proved Scouts Don’t Always Know Best

Every year, NFL scouts clock 40-yard dashes, dissect throwing mechanics, and obsess over hand size like it’s a life-or-death situation. But for all that data and analysis, sometimes the best quarterbacks are the ones they underestimated—or flat-out ignored.

These 15 quarterbacks didn’t have the hype, the pedigree, or the perfect draft day profile. But they carved out careers that made scouts everywhere shake their heads and say, “Yeah, we missed on that one.”

15. Tony Romo

Nov 3, 2013; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9) smiles prior to the game against the Minnesota Vikings at AT&T Stadium.

Undrafted and unbothered, Tony Romo worked his way up from obscurity to become the face of the Cowboys for over a decade. He made plays, broke records, and casually proved a whole bunch of people wrong in the process.

14. Tyrod Taylor

Sep 15, 2016; Orchard Park, NY, USA; Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor (5) looks to make a pass during the second half against the New York Jets at New Era Field. The Jets beat the Bills 37 to 31.
Timothy T. Ludwig-Imagn Images

Always the afterthought, never the headline—Tyrod Taylor turned athleticism and patience into a solid NFL career. He’s been the bridge, the backup, and occasionally the star, showing scouts he had staying power.

13. Jacoby Brissett

Brissett wasn’t supposed to last this long in the league, but he keeps finding work. He’s not flashy, but he’s competent, reliable, and consistently better than anyone expected.

12. Jeff Garcia

Jan. 13, 2007; New Orleans, LA, USA; Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jeff Garcia (7) tries to hear a play call against the New Orleans Saints during the 1st quarter of action in the NFC Divisional Playoff game at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Jeff Garcia took a detour through Canada before lighting it up in the NFL. Nobody had him pegged for Pro Bowls, but that’s exactly where he ended up.

11. Brock Purdy

Jun 11, 2025; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) throws a pass during a team OTA at Levi's Stadium.

Mr. Irrelevant? Not even close. Purdy went from the last pick in the draft to leading one of the most dangerous offenses in football.

10. Jake Delhomme

January 01, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans quarterback Jake Delhomme (17) throws a pass in the fourth quarter against the Tennessee Titans at Reliant Stadium. The Titans defeated the Texans 23-22.

The guy started as a backup in New Orleans and somehow ended up leading the Panthers to a Super Bowl. Jake Delhomme had zero hype but plenty of heart.

9. Rich Gannon

Oct 12, 2003; Cleveland, OH, USA; Oakland Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon (12) scrambles in the pocket against Cleveland Browns defensive end Courtney Brown (92) at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Browns beat the Raiders 13-7.
Matthew Emmons-Imagn Images

It took a while for Gannon to hit his stride, but when he did, he became an MVP. Not bad for someone; most teams gave up early.

8. Ryan Fitzpatrick

Oct 17, 2016; Glendale, AZ, USA; New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (14) looks to pass during the first half against the Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Matt Kartozian-Imagn Images

Fitzpatrick was a Harvard grad who looked more like a substitute teacher than an NFL quarterback. But he played 17 seasons, threw for over 34,000 yards, and became a cult hero in the process.

7. Marc Bulger

Dec. 7, 2008; Glendale, AZ, USA; St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger throws a pass in the third quarter against the Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals defeated the Rams 34-10 to clinch the NFC West division title.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

No one was rushing to sign Marc Bulger out of college, but he stepped into “The Greatest Show on Turf” and made it look easy. Quietly, he became one of the most productive QBs of his era for a stretch.

6. Trent Green

Oct 24, 2004; Kansas City, MO, USA; Kansas City Chiefs quarterback #10 Trent Green throws a pass against the Atlanta Falcons defense in 1st half action at Arrowhead Stadium.

Trent Green was an afterthought until he landed in the right place at the right time. He turned a journeyman label into a Pro Bowl career.

5. Matt Hasselbeck

Nov 22, 2009; Minneapolis, MN, USA; Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck (8) passes against the Minnesota Vikings in the first quarter at the Metrodome.
Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images

Drafted to sit behind Brett Favre, Hasselbeck didn’t exactly scream “future franchise QB.” But once he got his shot in Seattle, he ran with it to a Super Bowl appearance.

4. Kirk Cousins

Sep 10, 2017; Landover, MD, USA; Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins (8) runs with the ball as Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Beau Allen (94) looks on in the second quarter at FedEx Field.
Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

He was the other quarterback Washington took in the 2012 draft, but guess who’s still starting? Cousins has made a career out of proving he belonged in Round 1 all along.

Too short, too unconventional, and too often overlooked—until he won a Super Bowl in his second year. Russell Wilson made every scout who doubted him look silly.

He went from stocking shelves at a grocery store to winning MVPs and a Super Bowl. Kurt Warner’s story is the ultimate mic drop for every scout who passed him up.
