Ranking the 15 NFL Teams Most in Their “Villain Era”

Every good story needs a villain, and the NFL has never been short on teams ready to play the role. Whether it’s because of a polarizing quarterback, an annoying fanbase, or just too much winning, some franchises have fully embraced their dark side lately—and fans love to hate them for it.

From subtle smugness to full-blown “we’re the bad guys and we love it” energy, these teams are leaning into their villain eras. So grab your popcorn, because these are the 15 NFL teams currently thriving as the league’s most love-to-hate squads.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers always have a little swagger, but lately it’s been bordering on smug. Between the defense’s chest-pounding and constant “we’re still elite” energy, people are getting tired of the act.

14. Detroit Lions

America loved the underdog story until Detroit started acting like they’ve been here forever. One great season and suddenly they’re tossing shade like a team with five rings.

13. Houston Texans

They’ve gone from irrelevant to borderline cocky in record time. With a young star quarterback and a rapidly swelling sense of self, the Texans are entirely in their villain era and loving every second.

12. Cincinnati Bengals

Bengals Joe Burrow (9) gets ready for a play during their game against the Steelers at Acrisure Stadium on Saturday January 4, 2025. The Bengals won the game with a final score of 19-17.

The Bengals are talented, cocky, and not shy about letting everyone know it. The Joe Burrow cool factor has transformed into full-blown swagger, and not everyone’s here for it.

11 San Francisco 49ers

Something about the 49ers’ “we do everything better” attitude rubs people the wrong way. The talent is there, but so is the condescension.

10. Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been all over the place in recent years. One year they’re decent and the next they’re firing their head coach and starting completely over. This rollercoaster has made them hard to root for.

9. Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens love playing the villain, and they do it well. They’re never shy about making enemies, from physical play to chirpy press conferences.

8. Miami Dolphins

Speed kills, and so does nonstop flexing on social media. The Dolphins have become the flashy showboats of the league, and fans either love it or loathe it.

7. Cleveland Browns

Jan 4, 2025; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; Cleveland Browns quarterback Bailey Zappe (2) and Cleveland Browns linebacker Winston Reid (59) react after a play during the first quarter against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

The Browns went from lovable losers to villains the minute they made certain off-field decisions. The team still plays with a chip, but now it feels more sinister.

6. Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (17) talks in the huddle about the two point conversion play during the second half of the Buffalo Bills wild card game against the Denver Broncos at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park on Jan. 12, 2025.

The Bills Mafia is always loud, and lately, so is the team’s entitlement. There’s a creeping sense that Buffalo thinks it’s owed something, and people are starting to root against them.

5. New York Jets

Dec 15, 2024; Jacksonville, Florida, USA; New York Jets safety Ashtyn Davis (21) reacts after a special play on fourth down against the Jacksonville Jaguars during the first quarter at EverBank Stadium

The Jets were chaotic enough before the Aaron Rodgers debacle, but now they’re just a mess. They’re somehow the league’s loudest, most dramatic team—and they haven’t even proven anything yet.

4. Dallas Cowboys

Dec 8, 2020; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; Dallas Cowboys center Joe Looney (73) points towards the sky while standing with his teammates during the playing of the national anthem before the game against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium

They’ve always been polarizing, but the Cowboys have leaned deeper into the “we’re America’s team, deal with it” attitude. Every season is “their year,” and that confidence borders on cartoon-villain levels of delusion.

3. New England Patriots

Oct 13, 2024; Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye (10) calls the play in the huddle during the first half against the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium

Even in their rebuild, the Patriots can’t shake their villain era. The ghost of Belichick still lingers, and the “we’re smarter than you” vibe is alive and well.

2. Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles don’t mind being hated—they crave it. Their fans and players bring a relentless, chaotic energy that’s always just one shove away from full-on villain status.

The Chiefs were darlings once, but that era is long gone. People are waiting for them to lose, especially with all the Taylor Swift noise and nonstop primetime slots.
