Shemar Stewart Skips Bengals Camp, Trains at Alma Mater Instead

Bengals First-Round Pick Shemar Stewart Skips Rookie Camp

The Cincinnati Bengals’ 2025 NFL Draft just hit a major snag. First-round pick Shemar Stewart, a 21-year-old defensive end from Texas A&M, has officially blown off rookie training camp. Instead of reporting, Stewart shared a photo from his alma mater’s practice field in College Station, fueling controversy around his ongoing contract standoff.

Stewart has been holding out over what he calls “unfair” terms in his rookie contract. He’s reportedly pushing back against language in the deal and demanding more guaranteed money. Bengals exec Duke Tobin told reporters, “He needs to be here… He’s getting bad advice,” hinting at a growing rift between Stewart’s camp and the franchise.

Stewart’s Absence Adds to Cincinnatis’ Defensive Woes

This isn’t just about one rookie. The Bengals are already down key defensive players. Star edge rusher Trey Hendrickson is also holding out over a contract dispute, while veteran Sam Hubbard recently retired. Even with the signings of McTelvin Agim and Taven Bryan, the Bengals’ front seven is stretched thin heading into training camp.

Stewart, the 17th overall pick, stands to earn a $10.4 million signing bonus once he signs. But his stance remains firm: “Y’all just want to win an argument instead of winning more games,” he said in June.

The Bengals’ offseason drama could spell trouble if these defensive gaps aren’t resolved quickly. As veterans prepare to report, eyes will remain fixed on whether Stewart blinks, or if Cincinnati gives in.
