Shohei Ohtani has kept things light at the MLB All-Star Game, even after a heated moment with one of the league’s top closers. The Dodgers superstar spotted Padres pitcher Robert Suarez during Monday’s Home Run Derby festivities and used the opportunity to share a laugh about a not-so-funny incident from last month.
Back on June 19, Suarez was ejected after hitting Ohtani in the shoulder with a 100-mph fastball. The pitch led to a tense moment between the NL West rivals, but Ohtani calmly waved off his dugout, stopping any potential escalation. Suarez was later suspended two games for the hit-by-pitch.
Fast forward to the All-Star break, and Ohtani made light of the incident. Upon seeing Suarez, he jokingly rubbed his shoulder like it still hurt, then smiled and embraced the Padres closer. The exchange ended with a handshake and hug, proof that there are no hard feelings between the two stars.
MLB All-Star Camaraderie Among Rivals
The moment also highlighted the mutual respect between the Dodgers and Padres. Two franchises known for their fierce competition. Even Fernando Tatis Jr., who was also hit by a pitch and briefly injured in that same June 19 matchup, had kind words for Ohtani during media day. Tatis called Ohtani “the best player in baseball”, a sentiment many fans and players share.

Ohtani, a two-time All-Star, continues to showcase not only his generational talent. But also his humility and sense of humor. He’s beloved by teammates, respected by rivals, and admired by fans league-wide.
From painful fastball to playful reunion, Shohei Ohtani reminded us once again why he’s one of the most likable faces in MLB. The All-Star Game may be about competition. But it’s also about bringing baseball’s biggest stars together. And sometimes, even a 100-mph grudge can turn into a friendly laugh.
