MLB’s Most Rooted-Against Teams, Ranked

In baseball, every team has its share of loyal fans, but some teams? They just bring out the hater in people. Whether it’s because of a bloated payroll, constant media coverage, or a history of rubbing opponents the wrong way, there are clubs that fans love to root against.

This list isn’t about who’s the worst or who’s the best. It’s about who attracts the most schadenfreude. From mild indifference to full-on “I hope they lose every night,” here’s how every MLB team stacks up when it comes to people rooting for their downfall.

30. Kansas City Royals

May 21, 2025; San Francisco, California, USA; Kansas City Royals center fielder Kyle Isbel (28) celebrates with designated hitter Vinnie Pasquantino (9) after scoring a run against the San Francisco Giants during the second inning at Oracle Park.

Nobody really gets fired up to root against the Royals. They’re the harmless underdog of the American League, and most folks barely remember they won it all in 2015.

29. Milwaukee Brewers

May 23, 2025; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Milwaukee Brewers designated hitter Christian Yelich (22) congratulates catcher William Contreras (24) crossing home plate on a solo home run against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the ninth inning at PNC Park
Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

The Brewers don’t offend anyone. They’re just out there doing their thing, usually good-but-not-great, and rarely causing a stir.

28. Seattle Mariners

May 23, 2025; Houston, Texas, USA; Seattle Mariners pitcher Andres Munoz (75) is congratulated by Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh (29) after the final out against the Houston Astros during the ninth inning at Daikin Park
Erik Williams-Imagn Images

People want the Mariners to succeed, not fail. A team that’s been playoff-starved for decades just doesn’t inspire much hate.

27. Minnesota Twins

May 23, 2025; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Twins outfielder Harrison Bader (12) hugs first base Ty France (13) after his walk off home run against the Kansas City Royals in the ninth inning at Target Field.
Brad Rempel-Imagn Images

The Twins have been around forever and mostly keep to themselves in the AL Central. They’re not hated, just… politely ignored.

26. Baltimore Orioles

May 21, 2025; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA; Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman (35) is greeted by second baseman Jackson Holliday (7) after hitting a 3-run home run in the eleventh inning as Milwaukee Brewers catcher Eric Haase (13) looks on at American Family Field
Benny Sieu-Imagn Images

The Orioles are finally fun again after years of irrelevance. Most fans are enjoying the resurgence more than hoping for a crash.

25. Cincinnati Reds

Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona (77) speaks with players at the pitchers mound in the sixth inning of the MLB National League game between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs, Friday, May 23, 2025, at Great American Ball Park in Downtown Cincinnati.

There’s a lot of nostalgia and respect for the Reds. They’re more of a lovable mess than a villain.

24. Arizona Diamondbacks

May 23, 2025; St. Louis, Missouri, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte (4) is congratulated by third base coach Shaun Larkin (88) after hitting a solo home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the fourth inning at Busch Stadium.
Jeff Curry-Imagn Images

The Diamondbacks kind of sneak around in the background. Even when they’re good, they don’t draw too much national attention or venom.

23. Detroit Tigers

Apr 28, 2025; Houston, Texas, USA; Detroit Tigers right fielder Riley Greene (31) scores a run after hitting a home run during the eighth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park.
Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

There’s some residual respect from their glory days, and now that they’re doing well? People actually respect it. Nobody’s circling Detroit on their “root against” calendar — yet.

22. Cleveland Guardians

May 3, 2025; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Cleveland Guardians right fielder Jhonkensy Noel (43) tries to catch a fly ball against the Toronto Blue Jays during the fourth inning at Rogers Centre.
Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images

Name change discourse aside, the Guardians are mostly off the national radar. They’re competitive, but not hated.

21. Washington Nationals

May 6, 2025; Washington, District of Columbia, USA; Washington Nationals catcher Riley Adams (15) celebrates hitting a solo home run with center fielder Jacob Young (30) during the sixth inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Nationals Park
James A. Pittman-Imagn Images

They had their moment in 2019, but the vibes have settled back to neutral. No one’s actively rooting against the Nats at this point.

20. Tampa Bay Rays

May 23, 2025; St. Petersburg, Florida, USA; Tampa Bay Rays celebrate after they beat the Toronto Blue Jays at George M. Steinbrenner Field
Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images

Some folks are annoyed by the analytics-over-everything approach. But let’s be honest—most fans are just confused that they win with 12 people in the stands.

19. Pittsburgh Pirates

May 23, 2025; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz (right) greets designated hitter Andrew McCutchen (22) crossing home plate to score a run against the Milwaukee Brewers during the seventh inning at PNC Park
Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

Even when they’re bad, people root for their potential, not their demise. That said, their ownership decisions can definitely spark frustration.

18. Chicago White Sox

May 23, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago White Sox players celebrate after defeating the Texas Rangers in a baseball game at Rate Field.
Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

White Sox fans are passionate, but the team’s dysfunction makes them hard to hate—they do a good enough job collapsing on their own.

17. Toronto Blue Jays

May 3, 2025; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette (11) hits a home run and celebrates with baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (27) against the Cleveland Guardians during the first inning at Rogers Centre.
Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images

The Jays have a cocky young core that rubs some the wrong way. Combine that with loud fans online, and you’ve got a low-key villain brewing.

16. Colorado Rockies

May 1, 2025; San Francisco, California, USA; Colorado Rockies second baseman Kyle Farmer (6) and shortstop Alan Trejo (31) celebrate their win over the San Francisco Giants in the ninth inning at Oracle Park
Eakin Howard-Imagn Images

It’s more pity than malice here, but some people genuinely root for chaos when it comes to this front office. Especially when they let star players walk for peanuts.

15. St. Louis Cardinals

May 23, 2025; St. Louis, Missouri, USA; St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Victor Scott II (11) celebrates with first baseman Alec Burleson (41) after scoring against the Arizona Diamondbacks during the sixth inning at Busch Stadium.
Jeff Curry-Imagn Images

Baseball’s self-proclaimed moral compass can come off smug. When they struggle, plenty of folks secretly enjoy it.

14. Oakland Athletics

Sep 22, 2024; Oakland, California, USA; Oakland Athletics first baseman Tyler Soderstrom (21) scores a run against the New York Yankees in the sixth inning at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images

Normally, they’d be low on this list, but the owner’s Vegas move and the franchise’s sad state have fans rooting for something to collapse, just maybe not the team itself.

13. Miami Marlins

May 14, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Miami Marlins center fielder Kyle Stowers (28) celebrates with first baseman Matt Mervis (36) after hitting a solo home run against the Chicago Cubs during the second inning at Wrigley Field.
Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

The Marlins are easy to ignore most years, but their fire-sale reputation keeps people wary. It’s hard to root for a franchise that trades stars like it’s a hobby.

12. Texas Rangers

May 13, 2025; Arlington, Texas, USA; Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung (6) is greeted by outfielder Adolis García (53) after hitting a three-run home run scoring outfielder Sam Haggerty (0) and outfielder Evan Carter (32) during the first inning against the Colorado Rockies at Globe Life Field.
Raymond Carlin III-Imagn Images

Winning the World Series gave them new haters. Add in some flashy contracts and a chip-on-the-shoulder vibe, and you’ve got a team people want to knock off now.

11. Philadelphia Phillies

May 23, 2025; West Sacramento, California, USA; Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (45) meets with the infielders in the seventh inning against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park
Dennis Lee-Imagn Images

The Phillies are loud, dramatic, and full of personality—and not everyone’s a fan. If you don’t love them, you probably really want to see them lose.

10. San Diego Padres

May 23, 2025; Cumberland, Georgia, USA; San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (13) reacts with right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. (23) after hitting a go ahead home run against the Atlanta Braves during the ninth inning at Truist Park.
Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

Big payroll, big personalities, and no playoff results to match. It’s the perfect storm for people to root for a letdown.

9. Boston Red Sox

Apr 29, 2025; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (10) congratulates third baseman Alex Bregman (2) on his solo home run against the Toronto Blue Jays during the first inning at Rogers Centre.
John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images

Even when they’re down, people enjoy their misery. The “we’re still cursed” act doesn’t work after four titles in two decades.

8. Houston Astros

May 22, 2025; Houston, Texas, USA; Houston Astros starting pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. (43) walks to the dugout after retiring the side against the Seattle Mariners during the first inning at Daikin Park
Erik Williams-Imagn Images

The sign-stealing scandal made them public enemy No. 1 for years. Even now, every loss still feels like cosmic justice to a lot of fans.

7. Chicago Cubs

May 16, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong (4) is greeted by second base Nico Hoerner (2) after hitting a three run home run against the Chicago White Sox during the second inning at Wrigley Field.
David Banks-Imagn Images

The loveable loser title expired in 2016. Since then, their fanbase’s smugness and media attention have made them a target.

6. Atlanta Braves

May 22, 2025; Washington, District of Columbia, USA; Atlanta Braves first base Matt Olson (28) is congratulated by designated hitter Marcell Ozuna (20) after hitting a solo home run against the Washington Nationals during the first inning at Nationals Park.
Brad Mills-Imagn Images

They win a lot and let everyone know it. The cocky energy, online fanbase, and constant success make them easy to root against if you’re not on the bandwagon.

5. San Francisco Giants

May 23, 2025; Washington, District of Columbia, USA; San Francisco Giants players celebrate after their game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.
Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

The even-year dynasty was fun—until it wasn’t. There’s something about the Giants’ aura that makes people outside the Bay Area hope for stumbles.

4. New York Mets

May 21, 2025; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor (12) celebrates his home run against the Boston Red Sox with first baseman Pete Alonso (20) during the ninth inning at Fenway Park
Eric Canha-Imagn Images

The Mets are chaos magnets, and everyone has an opinion. For some, it’s like watching a soap opera—you root for disaster because it’s more entertaining.

3. Los Angeles Angels

May 23, 2025; Anaheim, California, USA; Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto (9, left) and left fielder Taylor Ward (3, right) celebrate a win after defeating the Miami Marlins at Angel Stadium.
Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images

People aren’t rooting against the Angels as much as they are rooting for poetic collapse. With all that talent wasted, it feels like watching a slow-motion car crash.

2. New York Yankees

May 23, 2025; Denver, Colorado, USA; New York Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge (99) celebrates his solo home run with designated hitter Ben Rice (22) in the fifth inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images

The Evil Empire. No team in baseball inspires more joy in losing than the Yankees—unless you’re from the Bronx.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

May 21, 2025; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Tanner Scott (66) is congratulated by Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing (38) after a save in the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images

The Yankees may be the historical villains, but lately it’s the Dodgers who take the crown. The payroll, the expectations, the rings —people love watching L.A. fall short.
