NCAA Champion Waived by WNBA Team After Five Games

Kianna Williams Waived by Mercury After Just Five Games

As the Phoenix Mercury return from the WNBA All-Star break, they’ll be missing a familiar face in the backcourt, Kianna Williams.

On Tuesday, the team officially announced it had waived the fourth-year guard, just weeks after she rejoined the league. Williams appeared in five games, averaging 6.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists over 13.8 minutes per game while shooting an efficient 50.0% from the field and 35.7% from three.

A Brief But Impactful WNBA Return

Williams signed a prorated rest-of-season deal with the Mercury on June 26, followed by a seven-day contract on July 15. She debuted in Phoenix’s 106–91 win over New York on June 27 and delivered a standout 17-point performance on July 7 against the Dallas Wings, going 7-for-8 from the floor.

Despite her promising flashes, the Mercury, currently 15–7 and sitting second in the Western Conference, opted to make the move as part of broader roster adjustments before the playoff push.

A former NCAA champion and three-time All-Pac-12 selection at Stanford, Williams was drafted 18th overall by the Seattle Storm in 2021. She’s also had stints with the Connecticut Sun, WNBL’s Adelaide Lightning, and Hefei in China.

With injuries piling up across the WNBA, Williams’ sharpshooting and court vision may earn her another opportunity soon. Several teams looking to bolster guard depth could find her a valuable addition.
