Every few years, a high school football phenom comes along with more hype than a Marvel movie premiere. These recruits are hailed as the future of the program, the next Heisman winner, or the player who will finally bring home a national championship.
But for every Trevor Lawrence, there’s a long list of guys who never lived up to the billing. Whether it was injuries, bad fits, or just way too much pressure, these once-hyped recruits were supposed to change everything—until they didn’t.
15. Max Browne – USC

USC thought they were getting the next elite quarterback when Browne committed. Instead, he got buried on the depth chart and never quite found his footing.
14. Lorenzo Booker – Florida State

Booker was one of the most hyped running backs in the country. His college career wasn’t bad, but it was far from the electric dominance everyone expected.
13. Mitch Mustain – Arkansas/USC

He was the top quarterback in the country and undefeated as a freshman starter. Then the coaching drama hit, and Mustain’s career slowly faded into backup duty.
12. Patrick Turner – USC

Turner was supposed to be the next great USC receiver in the line of Mike Williams and Dwayne Jarrett. But he never became that dominant force, and his impact was minimal.
11. Dayne Crist – Notre Dame

He had the size, arm, and pedigree to be the guy at Notre Dame. But a series of injuries and inconsistent play kept him from taking over.
10. Darrell Scott – Colorado

Scott was a can’t-miss running back who chose Colorado over the powerhouse programs. Turns out, missing Scott hurt more for Colorado than anyone else.
9. Bryce Brown – Tennessee/Kansas State

Brown was the nation’s top recruit and the subject of national headlines. But with transfers and lackluster production, he never became the game-changer everyone hoped for.
8. Garrett Gilbert – Texas

Gilbert was handed the keys to the kingdom after Colt McCoy. Unfortunately, turnovers and struggles under pressure made his reign short-lived.
7. Kyle Wright – Miami

Wright looked like the guy who would bring “The U” back to glory. Instead, he got sacked, criticized, and forgotten in the shuffle of Miami mediocrity.
6. Noel Devine – West Virginia

Devine’s highlight tapes were legendary in high school. He showed flashes, but consistency and off-field concerns kept him from becoming a true superstar.
5. Kevin Newsome – Penn State

Newsome was supposed to be the next dual-threat savior for Penn State. But he got stuck in the shuffle and never became a major factor.
4. Seantrel Henderson – Miami

Henderson was one of the highest-rated offensive linemen ever. But he struggled with off-field issues and never dominated like expected.
3. Blake Barnett – Alabama

Barnett had all the tools and the Alabama hype machine behind him. But he lost the starting job early and quickly became college football’s forgotten man.
