Lewis Hamilton’s 2025 season continues to spiral. Despite flashes of his former brilliance, the seven-time world champion hasn’t found consistency on the track. And now, his recent comments have sparked talk of a possible mid-season retirement.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, a venue where Hamilton has historically dominated, he failed to impress. While teammate Charles Leclerc took pole position, Hamilton was knocked out in Q2 and qualified 12th. He didn’t sugarcoat his disappointment, even joking that Ferrari should “change drivers.”
Race day wasn’t any better. Hamilton finished exactly where he started: P12. Ferrari team boss Frédéric Vasseur tried to explain the result, noting how Hamilton narrowly missed out in Q2 and how the team’s decision to start on hard tyres didn’t pay off.

“It’s me every time. I’m just useless. The team has no problem. The second car is on pole, so they probably just need to change driver.”

But the bigger story came post-race.
When asked whether he’d return after the summer break, Hamilton told GPblog he was “looking forward” to being back. Then came the eyebrow-raiser: “Hopefully I’ll be back, yeah.”
That one word “hopefully” has fans speculating. Could Hamilton really be eyeing an early retirement?
Despite his struggles, the Briton remains hopeful about Ferrari’s direction. He credited the team’s upgrades and hard work but admitted they’re still not on par with the front-runners.
“It’s a shame we’re not as competitive as the guys at the front,” Hamilton said. “But Charles has had two really strong races. The car is progressing. We just have to keep extracting more from it.”
Still, doubts linger. Is this just frustration speaking, or the early signs of a goodbye?
