Hulk Hogan, Pro Wrestler Who Became a Household Name, Dies at 71

Hulk Hogan Dies at 71 After Cardiac Arrest

Hulk Hogan, one of the most iconic and recognizable professional wrestlers in history, has died at the age of 71. TMZ reports that emergency services responded to a cardiac arrest call at his Clearwater, Florida home on Thursday. Promoter Eric Bischoff, Hogan’s longtime friend and business partner, confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter.

The death of “The Hulkster” marks the end of a larger-than-life career that not only defined the golden era of pro wrestling but helped transform it into mainstream entertainment. Towering at 6-foot-7 with his signature mustache, bandana, and charisma, Hogan became a cultural phenomenon whose influence extended well beyond the squared circle.

The Rise of Hulkamania

Born Terry Gene Bollea on August 11, 1953, in Augusta, Georgia, Hogan’s journey to wrestling superstardom began in the gyms of Tampa, Florida. Discovered by Japanese wrestling star Hiro Matsuda, Hogan trained vigorously before entering the ring under various monikers, including “Sterling Golden” and “Terry ‘The Hulk’ Boulder.” His defining name, Hulk Hogan, came during a talk show appearance where he was compared favorably in size to Lou Ferrigno, the actor who played The Incredible Hulk.

His meteoric rise began in the early 1980s when he captured the WWE Heavyweight Championship by defeating The Iron Sheik at Madison Square Garden. That victory launched Hulkamania, a wrestling and cultural movement that would make Hogan a household name.

With his theme music “Real American” blaring, Hogan would enter arenas in yellow trunks and tear away his shirt to the roar of crowds, then deliver his iconic promos: “Whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on you?” He headlined WrestleMania eight times and famously bodyslammed the 520-pound Andre the Giant in 1987 before a record crowd of over 93,000.

From Ring to Screen: Hogan Conquers Hollywood

Hogan’s charisma wasn’t confined to wrestling. His big-screen debut came in Rocky III (1982), where he played the larger-than-life Thunderlips. That role led to starring appearances in films like Suburban Commando, Mr. Nanny, No Holds Barred, and Santa With Muscles.

He ventured into television as well, appearing in popular series like The A-Team, Baywatch, and Thunder in Paradise, and even voiced animated versions of himself. In 1985, Hogan co-hosted Saturday Night Live with Mr. T and starred in Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling, a Saturday morning cartoon. He later opened up his personal life to cameras in Hogan Knows Best, a reality show that aired on VH1.

Reinvention: Hollywood Hogan and the NWO Era

In 1996, Hogan shocked fans by turning heel, transforming from the ultimate good guy into a rule-breaking villain. At WCW’s Bash at the Beach, he revealed himself as the third member of the New World Order (NWO), joining Kevin Nash and Scott Hall in what would become wrestling’s most infamous faction.

Rebranded as Hollywood Hogan, he wore black and white, grew a beard, and ruled the WCW scene with brutal charisma, cheating tactics, and championship reigns. The heel turn rejuvenated his career and helped WCW surpass WWE in ratings for a time.

He later teamed with NBA star Dennis Rodman, feuded with legends like Ric Flair and Sting, and drew record-breaking viewership during this rebellious phase.

The Man Behind the Legend

Off-camera, Hogan was known as a devoted father and grandfather. He married three times, most recently to Sky Hogan in 2023. He shared two children, Nick and Brooke with his first wife, Linda Claridge.

A former rock band guitarist and Little League pitcher, Hogan’s path to superstardom was anything but conventional. But through it all, injuries, betrayals, reinventions, and redemption he never stopped being larger than life.

His passing closes a monumental chapter in wrestling history. But for millions of Hulkamaniacs, the memories, the matches, and the message, believe in yourself, say your prayers, eat your vitamins, will live forever.
