15 NFL Coaches You’d Never Want to Work For

Working in the NFL is a dream for many, but not all head coaches make that dream feel like a touchdown. Some run such tight ships, intense programs, or chaotic locker rooms that players and assistants alike have probably considered early retirement.

Whether they were known for wild outbursts, exhausting schemes, or just being plain impossible to please, these coaches made life a little more stressful for the folks around them. From old-school screamers to modern control freaks, here are 15 NFL coaches you definitely wouldn’t want to share an office with.

15. Eric Mangini

He tried to bring the Patriot Way to the Browns and Jets, but forgot to pack the success. Mangini’s intense rules and frosty personality made it feel more like detention than a football team.

14. Chip Kelly

The smoothies were cool, but everything else was pure chaos. Kelly’s rigid systems and lack of connection with players had guys checking their FitBits for the exit.

13. Bill O’Brien

When your GM and head coach are the same guy, and that guy is Bill O’Brien, things get weird fast. Power struggles, strange trades, and sideline meltdowns made Houston a tough place to clock in.

He wanted winners, but rarely got them. His intense speeches and dramatic approach didn’t translate well from linebacker to leader.

11. Joe Judge

Nov 15, 2020; East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA; New York Giants head coach Joe Judge coaches during the first half against the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium.

Judge tried to be the toughest guy in the room, even if the room didn’t ask for it. His obsession with discipline turned practices into marathons and meetings into lectures.

10. Urban Meyer

Sep 19, 2021; Jacksonville, Florida, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer reacts in the huddle with his players against the Denver Broncos at TIAA Bank Field.

The jump from college to the pros exposed every flaw. Between scandals and public player feuds, working for Meyer felt like a reality show nobody wanted to star in.

9. Josh McDaniels

Twice handed the keys, twice it blew up. McDaniels’ micromanagement and cold demeanor made working for him more frustrating than facing his old Patriots offense.

He was a great coach—if you liked your schedule filled with 14-hour days and zero margin for error. His old-school grind-it-out mentality wasn’t exactly built for work-life balance.

7. Bobby Petrino

6. Nick Saban

Legend in college? Absolutely. But in the NFL, his suffocating style and condescending tone rubbed pros the wrong way.

5. Greg Schiano

Aug 29, 2024; Piscataway, New Jersey, USA; Rutgers Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano reacts after a Scarlet Knights touchdown during the second half against the Howard Bison at SHI Stadium.

“Schiano Men” were expected to buy into every detail, down to how to stand in line. His militaristic style had players and staff counting the days.

4. Bill Parcells

Gruden’s energy might’ve been fun on camera, but behind closed doors, it was a whirlwind of control, chaos, and contradiction. Add in the off-field controversies and, yeah, hard pass.
