Ranking All 30 NBA Teams by How Many Enemies They’ve Made

In the NBA, it’s not just about winning championships, it’s about the enemies you make along the way. From dynasties that crushed dreams to scrappy teams that talked a little too much for their own good, every franchise has ruffled some feathers. Some are the villains everyone loves to hate, while others are barely on anyone’s radar.

This list ranks all 30 NBA teams based on how many enemies they’ve made; whether it’s because of a superstar, a rivalry, a dirty play, or just general vibes. We’re talking grudges, beef, bitterness, and bruised egos. Let’s dive in and see who’s made the most enemies in the league.

30. Charlotte Hornets

Apr 13, 2025; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Boston Celtics guard JD Davison (20) shoots over Charlotte Hornets forward Moussa Diabate (14) during the second half at TD Garden.
Paul Rutherford-Imagn Images

The Hornets have made very few enemies simply because nobody really remembers being mad at them. They’ve mostly been hanging out in the league’s background, bothering no one.

29. Detroit Pistons

Feb 24, 2025; Detroit, Michigan, USA; A wide view of the game between the Detroit Pistons and the LA Clippers during the first half at Little Caesars Arena.
David Reginek-Imagn Images

Once upon a time, the “Bad Boys” were public enemy number one, but that was decades ago. The modern Pistons are actually underdogs and easy to root for.

28. Washington Wizards

Mar 10, 2023; Washington, District of Columbia, USA; A general view of the court during the first half of game action between the Washington Wizards and the Atlanta Hawks at Capital One Arena.
Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images

The Wizards have had flashes of feistiness, but they’ve never been good or chaotic enough to build up lasting animosity. Most people just forget they exist until they’re playing their team.

27. Orlando Magic

Apr 27, 2025; Orlando, Florida, USA; Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum (0) shoots the ball against the Orlando Magic in the third quarter during game four of first round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Kia Center.
Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

Orlando has produced some stars, but not much controversy. Even when they win, it’s hard to imagine anyone truly rooting against them.

26. Sacramento Kings

Apr 16, 2025; Sacramento, California, USA; A general view of Golden 1 Center during tip off between the Dallas Mavericks and the Sacramento Kings.
Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images

The Kings had beef with the Lakers in the early 2000s, but the grudge has cooled off since. They’re more lovable underdogs than enemies these days.

25. Oklahoma City Thunder

May 22, 2025; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA; Paycom Center in the third quarter during game two of the western conference finals for the 2025 NBA Playoffs between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder.
Brett Rojo-Imagn Images

People were bitter about the move from Seattle, and the Harden trade still stings for some, but the current Thunder are young, exciting, and not hate-worthy… yet.

24. Minnesota Timberwolves

May 26, 2025; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Timberwolves forward Julius Randle (30) dribbles the ball against Oklahoma City Thunder guard Luguentz Dort (5) in the first half in game four of the western conference finals for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Target Center.
Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images

Aside from that Jimmy Butler practice debacle, the Timberwolves haven’t really picked many fights. They’ve mostly been dealing with their own issues.

23. LA Clippers

May 1, 2025; Inglewood, California, USA; LA Clippers center Ivica Zubac (40) shoots the ball against Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic (15) in the first half during game six of first round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Intuit Dome.
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

The Lob City era rubbed some folks the wrong way, but the Clippers have never consistently been good enough to sustain deep-rooted hate. Most of the noise comes from their cross-town rivalry.

22. New Orleans Pelicans

Dec 18, 2020; New Orleans, Louisiana, USA; General view of the Smoothie King Center in the first quarter during the game between the New Orleans Pelicans and the Milwaukee Bucks.
Chuck Cook-Imagn Images

Anthony Davis drama aside, the Pelicans are mostly an afterthought in league rivalries. They’re still waiting on a moment big enough to truly tick people off.

21. Utah Jazz

Apr 11, 2025; Salt Lake City, Utah, USA; Utah Jazz guard Keyonte George (3) dribbles the ball during the second half against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Delta Center.
Chris Nicoll-Imagn Images

Between passionate home crowds and a couple of testy playoff matchups, the Jazz have stirred some tension. But they rarely stay in the spotlight long enough to make it last.

20. Atlanta Hawks

Apr 18, 2025; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young (11) ties the game in the final seconds behind Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins (22) during the second half at State Farm Arena.
Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

Trae Young alone probably bumped the Hawks up five spots. He’s made a few arenas hostile with his villain energy, and that New York series lives rent-free in fans’ heads.

19. Portland Trail Blazers

Apr 11, 2025; Portland, Oregon, USA; Portland Trail Blazers guard Sidy Cissoko (91) dribbles the basketball during the second half against the Golden State Warriors at Moda Center.
Troy Wayrynen-Imagn Images

Dame Time ended more than a few playoff hopes, and his loyalty made it hard to dislike him — until it didn’t. Portland’s been lowkey petty in some beefs, and fans have noticed.

18. San Antonio Spurs

Apr 13, 2025; San Antonio, Texas, USA; Overall view of a game between the San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors during the second half at Frost Bank Center.
Scott Wachter-Imagn Images

They were too boring to hate during their dynasty, but too good to ignore. If you lost to them in the playoffs during the 2000s, chances are you still carry that grudge.

17. Memphis Grizzlies

Dec 17, 2020; Memphis, Tennessee, USA; overall view before the game between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Atlanta Hawks at FedExForum.
Justin Ford-Imagn Images

Ja Morant and the Grizzlies leaned all the way into villain mode for a stretch. A little trash talk, a few ejections, and suddenly everyone had Memphis circled on the calendar.

16. Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell (45) talks to the during the first half of game five against the Indiana Pacers in the second round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Rocket Arena.
Ken Blaze-Imagn Images

LeBron made them relevant, then ditched them twice. Depending on the era, the Cavs have been beloved, pitied, or deeply despised — often all at once.

15. Denver Nuggets

May 15, 2025; Denver, Colorado, USA; Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook (4) helps guard Julian Strawther (3) up from the court in the fourth quarter against the Oklahoma City Thunder during game six of the second round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Ball Arena.
Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

Success brings haters, and after winning their first title, Denver found themselves with a target. Jokic is beloved by some and infuriating to others, which lands them in the middle.

14. Brooklyn Nets

Jan 12, 2021; Brooklyn, New York, USA; General view of tipoff between the Brooklyn Nets and the Denver Nuggets during the first quarter at Barclays Center.
Brad Penner-Imagn Images

From moving cities to forming superteams that flamed out dramatically, the Nets have irritated more than a few fanbases. That Harden-Kyrie-KD era left scorched feelings everywhere.

13. Phoenix Suns

Apr 13, 2025; Sacramento, California, USA; Phoenix Suns guard Collin Gillespie (12) drives past Sacramento Kings guard Devin Carter (22) during the fourth quarter at Golden 1 Center.
John Hefti-Imagn Images

The Suns have swaggered their way into plenty of beefs in recent years. Whether it was Chris Paul in previous years, Devin Booker, or just general cockiness, they’ve made themselves easy to root against.

12. Milwaukee Bucks

Feb 10, 2020; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA; General view of the Fiserv Forum during warmups prior to the game between the Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks.
Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images

Giannis is widely loved, but the Bucks’ playoff antics and recent trash talk have built up some quiet resentment. Winning doesn’t make friends — it makes targets.

11. Toronto Raptors

Feb 28, 2020; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Toronto Raptors forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (left) passes the ball around Charlotte Hornets guard Nicolas Batum (5) and center Bismack Biyombo (8) at Scotiabank Arena. Charlotte defeated Toronto.
John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images

The Kawhi title run bruised some egos, and their fans can get a little intense online. Add in some heated playoff matchups, and you’ve got a team that’s earned its enemies.

10. Indiana Pacers

Jan 12, 2021; San Francisco, California, USA; Indiana Pacers guard Aaron Holiday (3) shoots as Golden State Warriors guard Damion Lee (1) defends in the first half at Chase Center.
John Hefti-Imagn Images

Before this season, the Indiana Pacers would never have been this high. But, given the drama with Tyrese Haliburton’s dad and their shock playoff run, they definitely have a number of fans rooting against them.

9. Dallas Mavericks

Dec 30, 2020; Dallas, Texas, USA; A view of the empty seats in the arena at the tipoff between the Dallas Mavericks and the Charlotte Hornets at the American Airlines Center.
Jerome Miron-Imagn Images

Between the Luka trade and the weird energy that follows Kyrie Irving, the Mavs have climbed the villain ladder. They’re a team you either love or love to beat.

8. Chicago Bulls

Apr 16, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey (3) defends Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo (13) during the second half at United Center.
David Banks-Imagn Images

The Jordan era did permanent damage to several franchises’ self-esteem. Even now, the Bulls carry an aura of smugness that some fans can’t stand.

7. New York Knicks

May 23, 2025; New York, New York, USA; New York Knicks guard Josh Hart (3) looks on in the fourth quarter against the Indiana Pacers during game two of the eastern conference finals for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Madison Square Garden.
Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

The Knicks are finally good after being average for ages, but their fanbase still talks like they’re always the gold standard. That arrogance alone breeds enemies league-wide.

6. Philadelphia 76ers

Apr 13, 2025; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia 76ers guard Jalen-Hood Schifino (17) shoots the ball against the Chicago Bulls in the third quarter at Wells Fargo Center.
Kyle Ross-Imagn Images

The Process annoyed people. Joel Embiid annoys people. Philly fans… really annoy people. It’s kind of their brand.

5. Houston Rockets

Jan 12, 2021; Houston, Texas, USA; Houston Rockets forward P.J. Tucker (17) and guard James Harden (13) and Rockets head coach Stephen Silas (right) react after a call during the third quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers at Toyota Center.
Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

From the Harden iso-ball days to the short-lived Westbrook experiment, Houston managed to bother just about everyone. Now they’re rebuilding, but the memory lingers.

4. Miami Heat

Apr 28, 2025; Miami, Florida, USA; Miami Heat guard Pelle Larsson (9) scores past Cleveland Cavaliers forward Dean Wade (32) in the first quarter during game four for the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Kaseya Center.
Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

Heat Culture gets under people’s skin. Add in a few Finals runs, some chest-pounding bravado, and Pat Riley’s smug grin — and you’ve got a long list of enemies.

3. Golden State Warriors

December 12, 2020; San Francisco, California, USA; General view of Chase Center during the first quarter between the Golden State Warriors and the Denver Nuggets.
Kyle Terada-Imagn Images

They turned into a dynasty and then turned into a meme. Between the winning, the superteam antics, and Draymond Green’s antics, people are still rooting for their downfall.

2. Boston Celtics

May 14, 2025; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown (7) controls the ball from New York Knicks forward OG Anunoby (8) in the second half during game five of the second round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at TD Garden.
Bob DeChiara-Imagn Images

Historic franchise? Check. Arrogant attitude? Check. Fanbase that thinks every player on the roster deserves a statue? Double check.

Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

No team in the NBA has made more enemies than the Lakers. The constant media attention, star-chasing, and championship rings make them the ultimate love-to-hate franchise.
