The New York Yankees have officially designated DJ LeMahieu for assignment, ending the veteran infielder’s seven-year run in the Bronx just weeks before the MLB trade deadline.
The move comes one day after the team benched LeMahieu to make room for newly acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second base. The Yankees now have seven days to trade, waive, or release the 35-year-old—though finding a trade partner could be difficult.
LeMahieu is still owed approximately $22 million through 2026, a factor likely to hinder interest. His .676 OPS in 142 plate appearances this season reflects a significant drop in production. And he no longer holds a guaranteed defensive role.

Yankees Eyeing Bigger Moves
The decision to DFA LeMahieu hints at a larger roster shakeup. New York is expected to pursue upgrades at third base rather than opt for another utility player like Isiah Kiner-Falefa. With LeMahieu off the roster, the Yankees can keep Oswald Peraza as a backup shortstop and prioritize adding power to the lineup.
LeMahieu leaves behind a strong legacy in pinstripes. A three-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove winner, and two-time batting champion. He hit .289 over 1,628 career games and was known for his elite glove and team-first mentality.
Furthermore, his leadership was so valued that, according to reports, Aaron Judge intervened last season to block a potential DFA.
But performance trumps sentiment. As the Yankees gear up for a playoff push, tough choices are being made.
