19 NFL Players Who Lost Their Cool on National TV

The NFL is full of elite athletes, but even the best can have a meltdown when the spotlight is brightest. Whether it’s a sideline tantrum, a postgame rant, or an in-game outburst, some players can’t help but put their emotions on full display.

These NFL stars gave America a front-row seat to their temper tantrums, breakdowns, and full-on freakouts. From heated arguments with coaches to on-field scuffles that went way too far, here are the players who lost it on national television.

19. Odell Beckham Jr.

OBJ has never shied away from a bit of drama, but it became meme-worthy chaos when he attacked a kicking net. It was the kind of meltdown only Beckham could turn into a performance.

18. Antonio Brown

There’s no shortage of moments, but storming off the field mid-game while shirtless was the peak AB spectacle. It was equal parts shocking and inevitable.

17. Philip Rivers

Dec 13, 2020; Paradise, Nevada, USA; Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers (17) watches from the sidelines in the fourth quarter against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.

Rivers never cursed, but he found creative ways to yell at everyone. The cameras always found him mid-rant, whether it was refs, opponents, or even his receivers.

16. Terrell Owens

Nov. 29, 2007; Irving, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens (81) against the Green Bay Packers at Texas Stadium.

TO lived for the spotlight, but sometimes the emotions boiled over in bizarre ways. His sideline sob sessions and “That’s my quarterback” speech were TV gold.

15. Michael Crabtree

Nov 25, 2018; Baltimore, MD, USA; Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Michael Crabtree (15) reacts after linebacker Terrell Suggs (not pictured) scores a touchdown in the fourth quarter against the Oakland Raiders at M&T Bank Stadium.

Crabtree was usually smooth, but that dust-up with a chain-snatching cornerback got way too personal. The helmets came off, the punches were thrown, and the cameras caught every second.

14. Dez Bryant

Nov 8, 2020; Indianapolis, Indiana, USA; Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Dez Bryant (88) reacts before a game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Dez always wore his heart on his sleeve, and that often meant animated sideline monologues that looked like full-on meltdowns. Even when he claimed he was just “passionate,” it sure didn’t look calm.

13. Aaron Donald

Dec 23, 2018; Glendale, AZ, USA; Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald (99) celebrates a second half sack against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.

Donald’s on-field switch can flip at any moment; when it does, it’s a terrifying sight. He’s been seen grabbing face masks, tossing helmets, and making sideline personnel extremely nervous.

12. Richard Sherman

Nov 24, 2019; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman (25) in the game against the Green Bay Packers during the first quarter at Levi's Stadium.

Sherman’s infamous postgame interview with Erin Andrews turned a standard win into a WWE promo. He was fired up, unfiltered, and had no intention of holding back.

11. Cam Newton

Jan 3, 2021; Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton (1) smiles after a touchdown against the New York Jets during the first half at Gillette Stadium.

Cam’s emotions have always been front and center, especially when things didn’t go his way. That post–Super Bowl press conference walk-off was the cherry on top of a frustrating night.

10. Marcus Peters

Oct 9, 2022; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marcus Peters (24) enter the field before the game against the Cincinnati Bengalsat M&T Bank Stadium.

Peters once yeeted a ref’s penalty flag into the stands like a souvenir. That unfiltered chaos is hard to replicate, especially with the country watching.

9. Brett Favre

Dec 20, 2010; Minneapolis, MN, USA; Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre (4) during the first quarter against the Chicago Bears at TCF Bank Stadium. The Bears defeated the Vikings 40-14.

Favre was usually cool, but it was a full-on spectacle when he got mad. He could go from chuckling to chewing out a teammate in seconds—and America saw every second.

8. Vontaze Burfict

Aug 15, 2019; Glendale, AZ, USA; Oakland Raiders linebacker Vontaze Burfict (55) warms up prior to a preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.

Burfict played on the edge—and sometimes well past it. He turned multiple games into chaos with his post-whistle antics and refusal to dial it back.

7. Jalen Ramsey

Dec 11, 2023; Miami Gardens, Florida, USA; Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey (5) looks on as he walks toward the locker room against the Tennessee Titans during halftime at Hard Rock Stadium.
Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

Ramsey’s confidence is unmatched, but so is his ability to flip out mid-game. He’s never far from a heated moment, whether fighting teammates or jawing with opponents.

6. Jay Cutler

Dec 17, 2017; Orchard Park, NY, USA; Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler (6) throws a pass against the Buffalo Bills during the fourth quarter at New Era Field.
Mark Konezny-Imagn Images

Cutler’s brand of losing his cool was more “checked-out dad” than explosive rage, but it still made for unforgettable TV. That thousand-yard stare after a bad pick became iconic in its weird way.

5. Ndamukong Suh

Dec 14, 2014; Detroit, MI, USA; Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh (90) before the game against the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field.
Tim Fuller-Imagn Images

Suh’s reputation was built on dominance and drama. Whether it was stomping on players or getting flagged for late hits, his temper was always one bad snap away from boiling over.

4. Randy Moss

Jan 12, 2013; San Francisco, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss (84) runs the ball against the Green Bay Packers during the first quarter of the NFC divisional round playoff game at Candlestick Park.
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

Moss once mooned the Green Bay crowd (figuratively, not literally—but still weird enough). That moment alone secured his place on this list, and it wasn’t even his wildest game-day outburst.

3. Courtland Finnegan

Oct 19, 2014; Chicago, IL, USA; Miami Dolphins cornerback Cortland Finnegan (24) before the game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
Mike DiNovo-Imagn Images

Finnegan pushed buttons for a living but lost control when Andre Johnson punched him into the turf. The scuffle was unforgettable, and the fact that it was nationally televised made it legendary.

2. Andre Johnson

Dec 28, 2014; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson (80) on the sideline during the fourth quarter against the Jacksonville Jaguars at NRG Stadium. The Texans defeated the Jaguars 23-17.
Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

Johnson was usually calm, but when he snapped, he snapped. Watching him unload haymakers on Finnegan in front of a stunned audience was one of the wildest scenes in NFL history.

The GOAT has a short fuse when things go south, and he’s made a habit of lighting up his tablets, linemen, or anyone within earshot. He may win rings, but he’s not the chillest guy on the sideline.
