20 MLB Stars Who Always Had a Problem With the Umpires

There are players who go with the flow, and then there are the ones who never met a called strike they didn’t want to scream about. Whether it was arguing balls and strikes, chirping from the dugout, or getting tossed for fun, these guys had a special relationship with the men in blue—and by special, we mean hostile.

Some were hotheads, others just perfectionists who couldn’t handle human error behind the plate. But one thing’s for sure: if there was a controversial call, they were probably in the middle of it.

20. Bryce Harper

May 24, 2024; Denver, Colorado, USA; Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper (3) argues with home plate umpire Brian Walsh (120) after being ejected in the first inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

Harper never needed much to start jawing with an ump, especially on borderline strike calls. Toss in some bat flips and eye rolls, and it’s been a rocky road with the guys behind the plate.

19. Carlos Zambrano

Jun 18, 2009; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano (left) talks with home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman (right) after hitting a Chicago White Sox batter during the second inning at Wrigley Field.
Jerry Lai-Imagn Images

Zambrano treated every close call like a personal attack. His meltdowns on the mound were legendary, and umpires often bore the brunt of his fire.

18. Josh Donaldson

Aug 17, 2019; Atlanta, GA, USA; Atlanta Braves third baseman Josh Donaldson (20) talks with umpire Paul Nauert (39) after being called out on strikes against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the third inning at SunTrust Park.
Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

Donaldson has made a career out of staring down umpires like he’s reading their souls. If a call didn’t go his way, you better believe the drama was coming.

17. Yadier Molina

Sep 28, 2018; Chicago, IL, USA; St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina (4) argues with umpire Adam Hamari (78) during the eighth inning against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images

As a catcher, he had a front-row seat to every questionable call—and wasn’t afraid to let umps know when they missed one. Even behind the plate, Yadi wasn’t above getting into it with the crew.

16. Manny Machado

Aug 4, 2023; San Diego, California, USA; San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (right) talks to home plate umpire John Bacon (70) after striking out to end the sixth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park.
Orlando Ramirez-Imagn Images

Machado’s temper has gotten him tossed more than a few times. He rarely holds back when he thinks the ump missed a call, especially if it costs him at the plate.

15. Chris Sale

July 3, 2012; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale (49) talks with home plate umpire C.B. Bucknor after the first inning against the Texas Rangers at US Cellular Field.
Jerry Lai-Imagn Images

Sale doesn’t just get mad—he simmers like a tea kettle until the lid blows. When an umpire made a questionable call, the slow-burn rage was very real.

14. Joey Votto

Oct 1, 2023; St. Louis, Missouri, USA; Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto (19) argues with umpire Shane Livensparger (43) after he was ejected from the game after the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
Jeff Curry-Imagn Images

Votto’s not your typical loudmouth, but he’s been known to lecture umps mid at-bat like a professor correcting a student. He’ll argue with a smile, but it still gets heated.

13. A.J. Pierzynski

Jul 21, 2016; Denver, CO, USA; Atlanta Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski (15) reacts to a base running interference call by umpire Mike Winters (33) allowing Colorado Rockies first baseman Daniel Descalso (3) (not pictured) to score in the eighth inning at Coors Field. The Rockies defeated the Braves 7-3.
Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images

He loved getting under people’s skin, including umpires. If there was a borderline call, Pierzynski had something to say (and probably something snarky, too).

12. Jonathan Papelbon

Sep 23, 2015; Washington, DC, USA; Washington Nationals relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon (58) argues with second base umpire Alan Porter (64) after being ejected from the game during the ninth inning against the Baltimore Orioles at Nationals Park. Baltimore Orioles defeated Washington Nationals 4-3.
Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images

Papelbon always pitched like he was one call away from detonation. And when that call didn’t go his way, it was go-time with the umpire.

11. Yasiel Puig

Jun 25, 2019; Anaheim, CA, USA; Cincinnati Reds right fielder Yasiel Puig (66) reacts after being thrown out of the game by umpire Kerwin Danley (44) during the sixth inning of the game against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
Orlando Ramirez-Imagn Images

Puig brought flair, passion, and a short fuse. His disagreements with umpires often felt like mini soap operas sprinkled throughout the season.

10. George Brett

Before the Pine Tar incident cemented his legacy of rage, Brett already had a rep for losing it on calls. The man never took a bad call quietly.

9. Kevin Youkilis

July 30, 2008; Boston, MA, USA; Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis (20) has a word with the umpire after striking out in the third inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Fenway Park.
David Butler II-Imagn Images

Youkilis had a knack for taking every strike call personally. His exaggerated reactions and disbelief were practically part of his batting stance.

8. Milton Bradley

Sept 4, 2007; Phoenix, AZ, USA; San Diego Padres left fielder (15) Milton Bradley argues with home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi in the fifth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Bradley didn’t just have issues with umpires—he had issues with everyone. But when he turned his frustration on the umps, it usually ended in fireworks.

7. Max Scherzer

Jun 25, 2025; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer (31) talks to home plate umpire Bill Miller (26) after walking a batter after a pitch clock violation in the fifth inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field.
David Richard-Imagn Images

Scherzer’s intensity is off the charts, and he expects perfection from himself and from the umps. A missed call meant icy glares and plenty of muttering.

6. B.J. Upton

May 14, 2014; San Francisco, CA, USA; Atlanta Braves center fielder B.J. Upton (2) argues the call by home plate umpire Lance Barrett (94) during the sixth inning against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.
Kelley L Cox-Imagn Images

Whether he was batting or playing the field, Upton always seemed a hair-trigger away from arguing. The guy had a knack for finding the umpire’s last nerve.

5. Paul O’Neill

Aug 24, 2024; Bronx, New York, USA; Former New York Yankees outfielder Paul O’Neill at Yankee Stadium.
Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images

O’Neill wore his emotions on his sleeve and never hesitated to let an umpire know he was wrong. Combine that with his bat-throwing tendencies, and it was never boring.

4. Javy Báez

May 9, 2022; Detroit, Michigan, USA; Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez (28) has to get held back by two umpires after being ejected from the game during the ninth inning against the Oakland Athletics at Comerica Park.
Raj Mehta-Imagn Images

Báez plays with swagger, and when that swagger met a called strike three, chaos often followed. He didn’t argue all the time—but when he did, he made it count.

3. Dennis Eckersley

1996, St. Louis, MO, USA; FILE PHOTO; St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dennis Eckersley in action on the mound at Busch Stadium during the 1996 season.
RVR Photos-Imagn Images

Eckersley’s fire came with some serious attitude, and he wasn’t afraid to challenge a call. Even as a closer, he made sure the umpires heard him.

Openverse

Okay, not a player—but no one got tossed more than this guy. Cox was practically an honorary umpire with how often he was out there arguing a call.

1. Pedro Martinez

May 14, 2006; Milwaukee, WI, USA; New York Mets pitcher #45 Pedro Martinez delivers a pitch during the first inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.
Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images

Pedro had it all: dominance, flair, and a deep distrust of umpires. He didn’t argue to argue—he argued because he knew he was right, and that made things spicy every time.
