Ranking the 25 Most Despised NFL Quarterbacks of All Time

Not every quarterback is destined to be beloved. For every Montana or Manning, there are a handful of passers who rubbed fans the wrong way—whether through poor play, bad attitudes, off-field drama, or just being really, really annoying to lose to.

This list isn’t necessarily about who was the worst. It’s about the guys who drew boos, sparked Twitter fights, or just became the face of frustration for entire fanbases. Here are the 25 most despised quarterbacks in NFL history.

25. Deshaun Watson

The off-field controversies overshadowed everything he did on it, turning public opinion rapidly against him. Even Browns fans didn’t know how to feel when he showed up in Cleveland.

24. Kerry Collins

Oct. 18 2010; Jacksonville, FL, USA; Tennessee Titans quarterback Kerry Collins (5) throws a pass against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Field.

He bounced around the league and had moments of competence, but never quite escaped a vibe of underachievement. Add in some early-career off-field issues, and he became an easy target for criticism.

23. Carson Wentz

Nov 26, 2017; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz (11) runs with the ball against the Chicago Bears at Lincoln Financial Field.

He went from MVP candidate to locker room scapegoat in record time. Fans and teammates alike grew tired of the inconsistency and the “I’m still the guy” energy long after it was true.

22. Jay Cutler

Oct. 24, 2010; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler (6) passes the ball during the second quarter against the Washington Redskins at Soldier Field.

21. Colin Kaepernick

Whether you supported him or not, he was undeniably one of the most polarizing figures in modern NFL history. His protests sparked national debate, making him beloved by some and despised by others.

20. Matt Cassel

November 14, 2010; Denver, CO, USA; Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel (7) calls out play during a fourth and one on the goal line against the Denver Broncos in the second half at Invesco Field. The Broncos defeated the Chiefs 49-29.

He was the poster child for “this guy again?” mediocrity. After his fluky success in New England, his fall was long, slow, and painful to watch.

19. Daniel Jones

Oct 10, 2019; Foxborough, MA, USA; New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones (8) runs with the ball during the first half against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium.
Paul Rutherford-Imagn Images

It’s not really his fault, but the Giants gave him way too much money and kept handing him the keys. Fans quickly turned on him as the face of a stagnant offense.

18. Jameis Winston

Sep 13, 2015; Tampa, FL, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston (3) runs off the field at the end of the first half against the Tennessee Titans at Raymond James Stadium.

Turnovers galore, bizarre press conferences, and the whole crab legs incident gave fans plenty to eye-roll about. Even when he was exciting, he was exhausting.

17. Boomer Esiason

Known just as much for his loud opinions as his play, Boomer was never afraid to speak his mind. That rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, especially in his post-playing days.

16. Jim McMahon

The punky QB of the ’85 Bears was brash, cocky, and always pushing buttons. Fans outside of Chicago didn’t appreciate the showmanship.

15. Mark Sanchez

Aug 15, 2011; Houston, TX, USA; New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez (6) throws a pass against the Houston Texans in the first quarter at Reliant Stadium.

The Butt Fumble became his legacy, whether fair or not. For a former top-five pick in New York, the fall from grace was hard and well-documented.

14. Mitch Trubisky

The Bears traded up for him, passed on Mahomes, and never heard the end of it. Trubisky bore the brunt of that anger, even if he was never supposed to be the savior.

13. Jeff George

Big arm, bigger ego, and a trail of frustrated coaches and teammates followed him everywhere. No matter where he went, things always seemed to implode.

12. Michael Vick

He electrified the league, but his off-field dogfighting scandal made him one of the most hated athletes in America for a time. His redemption arc was notable, but the damage was deep.

11. Dak Prescott

Aug 19, 2017; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (4) throws in the pocket against Indianapolis Colts at AT&T Stadium.
Matthew Emmons-Imagn Images

It’s not that Dak is a bad guy—he’s just the Cowboys quarterback. That alone is enough to earn national disdain, especially when expectations go unmet.

10. Tony Romo

Jan 09, 2010; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9) throws against the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth quarter during the 2010 NFC wild card playoff game Cowboys stadium. The Cowboys beat the Eagles 34-14.

A walking meme for late-game interceptions, Romo became the punchline for Cowboys collapses. His flair for drama kept him in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

9. Eli Manning

Dec 11, 2011; Dallas, TX, USA; New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning (10) throws prior to the game against the Dallas Cowboys at Cowboys Stadium.

Two rings couldn’t stop the hate. His derpy expressions and regular-season mediocrity made him a strange lightning rod for criticism.

8. Cam Newton

7. Philip Rivers

Jan 1, 2012, Oakland, CA, USA; San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers (17) gestures during the game against the Oakland Raiders at the O.co Coliseum. The Chargers defeated the Raiders 38-26.

That weird throwing motion, constant trash talk, and refusal to ever shut up made him a magnet for annoyance. Somehow he always felt like the guy you loved to hate.

6. Patrick Mahomes

Sep 23, 2018; Kansas City, MO, USA; Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) against the San Francisco 49ers in the first half at Arrowhead Stadium.
Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images

He’s incredible—no one is arguing that—but the over-saturation has reached critical levels. Between the State Farm ads, the constant praise, and that voice, even greatness can wear thin on some fans.

5. Tim Tebow

Oct 30, 2011; Denver, CO, USA; Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow (15) prepares to pass during the game against the Detroit Lions at Sports Authority Field. The Lions defeated the Broncos 45-10.
Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images

The media frenzy was unbearable, especially considering the actual on-field product. Fans were exhausted by the constant hype for a quarterback who couldn’t really throw.

4. Aaron Rodgers

Oct 2, 2011; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) against the Denver Broncos at Lambeau Field. The Packers defeated the Broncos 49-23.

1. Ben Roethlisberger

Dec 16, 2012; Arlington, TX, USA; Pittsburg Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (7) calls a play during the first half against the Dallas Cowboys at Cowboys Stadium.
